The current trend in the Telugu Film Industry is very different from what it was before. Due to the advent of OTT platforms, the audiences need to find the film worthy enough for them to step out of the comfort of their homes and go to the theatres.

While big budget films and star hero-backed ventures will somehow make a considerable amount of money, it is the small and medium budget films that are either a complete hit or a complete miss. While some small budget films are crashing on Day 1 itself, some are achieving breakeven by 3 days itself.

Because the budget of the film is considerably less, the theatrical rights are quite low. Therefore, if the film gets positive word of mouth, it will easily break even at the box office. But, if it gets negative word of mouth, it will crash unanimously as it is not a star-driven vehicle. Small and medium-budget films are both a boon and a curse.

Some examples of this phenomenon are the successes of Bimbisara and Sita Ramam. Bimbisara broke even on Day 3 itself while Sita Ramam took a little while longer due to a non-Telugu lead pair. The current state of the Telugu Film Industry is forcing the producers to make drastic changes to their remuneration models. While the remunerations for star heroes will still remain the same, the money given to small and medium-range heroes will go through a shift.

The Producers Council and the Guild have been conducting various meetings over the last few months about OTT releases, remunerations, ticket rates, and so on. In addition to that, they have also been discussing the remuneration given to small and medium-range heroes.

At the present moment, the Telugu Film Industry is in a sort of confused state. While some movies are doing very well at the box office, some are crashing on the opening day itself. In view of this, the producers are informing these heroes that they will no longer enjoy fancy advances and remunerations.

Just to take an example, Naga Chaitanya’s Thank You crashed at the box office on the opening day itself. Whereas, Kalyan Ram’s Bimbisara achieved breakeven in just 3 days. It has become very clear now that only good content will prevail.

As a result, the producers have come to a conclusion that the small and medium-range heroes will be given remunerations based on the percentage of the film’s business. This means that the remuneration will be decided only after the theatrical run.

Success and failure are very common when you are in the Film Industry. It is perhaps the most volatile industry which means that your market value keeps changing. An actor who is at the peak of their career at one point can also be in the pits at the next moment. This is a part and parcel of being in the film industry.

At one point Naga Chaitanya was struggling with back-to-back flops but he bounced back with continuous successes like Majili, Venky Mama, and Love Story. Just when everything was going right for the actor, he is now back to the flop streak once again.

After the unanimous success of Love Story, Thank You was an equally massive disaster. The movie recorded some of the worst collections of all time. This was quickly followed by Laal Singh Chaddha where Naga Chaitanya played an extended cameo. After Thank You’s failure, Laal Singh Chaddha has also failed miserably, making it two consecutive disasters for Chaitanya.

The main problem is that both the movies even failed to get decent openings. This means that the audiences are not that interested in the actor. If the movie fails after the opening day that is at least fine but an opening day crash is an extremely worrying sign. He needs to deliver a huge success now to recover from these failures.
