2025 Turns Golden for Mollywood

2025 has been a remarkable year for Mollywood, with the industry achieving impressive milestones at the box office thanks to Mohanlal’s Empuraan, Thudarum, and Kalyani Priyadarshini’s Lokah: Chapter 1 Chandra.

With Empuraan, Malayalam cinema sees the biggest opening ever, as the film opens with record-breaking numbers that Mollywood has never seen.

Till 2024 Mollywood does not have a single 100 Cr film in Kerala, but this year Mollywood strikes with two films, Thudarum and Lokah. The Malayalam film industry also does not have a single 10M film overseas till 2024.

But this year it struck with three 10M films: Empuraan, Thudarum, and Lokah. The year 2025 gave two industry hits for Mollywood. 

The two industry hits, or all-time highest grossers, are Empuraan and Lokah, while Empuraan, Thudarum, and Lokah all have crossed the 200 Cr gross mark at the box office.

The female superhero film Lokah is all set to achieve the 1st 300 Cr milestone for Mollywood. So, the Malayalam cinema continuously sees big blockbusters at the box office this year, and the industry expands massively.

The crew of the Suhas’ Mandaadi found themselves in trouble when their boat capsized off Thondi’s coast in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu.

Friday, October 3, 2025, was when the incident took place. However, everyone on the crew got out of the accident safe and sound, with two people ending up in the water and being saved.

A bunch of valuable film equipment, including a RED digital camera worth about 60 lakh rupees, ended up sinking. The equipment loss came out to roughly 1 crore rupees.

Even with the hiccup, the Mandaadi team managed to finish their filming schedule the next day.

Idli Kadai – 100 Cr Out of Reach

Dhanush came up before audiences with his latest directorial, Idli Kadai, in which he also acted as the lead. The film received a unanimous negative reaction in Telugu, but it had a decent response in Tamil. However, reaching the 100 Cr mark looks out of reach for Idli Kadai. 

The film’s Telugu version, Idli Kottu, crashed on opening day itself, and excluding Tamil Nadu, the other Tamil territories are also not performing well for the film. In 4 days the film has collected 31 Cr gross in Tamil Nadu, and worldwide gross will be around 42 Cr.

With today’s numbers, the Dhanush directorial gross will be around 50 Cr worldwide, and as other territories are not seeing big numbers already, the film is also facing competition from Kantara Chapter 1, which is dominating it in Tamil Nadu. 

So, Idli Kadi getting the 100 Cr number looks tough, and the chances of it posting strong numbers from tomorrow are less. Even if it has a good run at the box office, it can manage to go in the 75-80 Cr range, and joining the 100 Cr club is completely out of the question.

Dhanush’s previous directorial, Raayan, in which he played the lead role, has collected 150 Cr gross due to strong performance from all territories, but Idli Kadai is likely to collect just 1/2 of Raayan’s full run collections.
