Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and Simbu released today. The film, despite having great expectations, suffered in getting positive reviews and received a below-par report from a major section of audiences. The film is heading towards a disaster. There is also great criticism regarding the direction, writing, and character portrayals of the film. Netizens also pointed out the brave decision of Dulquer Salmaan and Jayam Ravi opting out of the film, who were initially considered for Simbu’s role.

Mollywood Actor, Dulquer Salmaan, was the initial choice for the team to rope him in for the character of Simbu, who played Amar in Thug Life. But the Actor came out of the film, and later the team approached Kollywood Actor Jayam Ravi, who had also exited. The role then finally landed in Simbu’s hands making it his second collaboration with Director Mani Ratnam after their Chekka Chivantha Vaanam.

Simbu’s character appeared dominant in the Trailer and other content of Thug Life that was out before the release. Many thought that he would steal the show when the film was released. But shockingly, his character made no mark, and Netizens have slammed the Actor for agreeing to the role. They also wondered why Simbu showed great interest in this character in such a shabby film.

Netizens also expressed that Dulquer Salmaan and Jayam Ravi haven’t missed acting in this film, but escaped the result just by a miss. This would have been an embarrassment for both Actors, which now Simbu had to face. As Netizens opined, Simbu should have ignored this film right away.

Kollywood Actor Suriya is in a peculiar situation. The Actor has not scored a big blockbuster in recent years, continuing his bad phase theatrically. His recent big-budget flicks, Kanguva and Retro, failed miserably at the box office, disappointing him greatly. Suriya, in the process of finalising his films, has let go of a few exciting projects which have landed in others’ hands now.

Before Kanguva, Suriya planned a big-budget film based on Mahabharatha’s character Karna in Bollywood. This film was planned as a 3-part series. He has also exited Sudha Kongara’s directorial then which has been titled Parasakthi and being made with Siva Karthikeyan now. Karna film was also dropped after the miserable result of Kanguva due to budget constraints.

Kollywood Director Lokesh Kanagaraj also had plans of collaborating with Suriya for a Super Hero based film. This film’s title was also speculated as Irumbu Kai Mayavi then. But, as per sources, this film has been planned with Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan now.

Apart from this, Suriya’s current film, Vaadi Vaasal directed by Vetrimaaran, is said to be dropped and replaced with Simbu in the lead role. If this news comes to be true then it will obviously be a shocker for Suriya, who would miss out on many exciting projects. He is currently working for Suriya 46 directed by Venky Atluri.

Second Film Syndrome For Kamal Haasan

It is widely known that Kamal Haasan scored a big disaster with Indian 2, directed by Shankar. Today, his latest film, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, is also receiving heavy backlash from audiences. The result of these two films worked like a second film syndrome for Kamal Haasan.

Both the veteran directors, Shankar and Mani Ratnam, worked with Kamal on career-defining films, Nayakan and Indian. However, both filmmakers produced duds with the Ulaganayagan when they worked with him for the second time.

Shankar and Mani Ratnam deliver disappointing Films With Kamal Haasan in their Second Collaborations

Indian 2 (Bharateeyudu 2) was trolled mercilessly by audiences for its outdated and pathetic content. Even reviewers also criticized that film and called out Shankar for ruining the image of the first part of the film.

Coming to Thug Life, the legendary director Mani Ratnam gave a classic in the form of Nayakan with Kamal. There were massive expectations for the second film of this iconic duo. The promotions also went well for the movie.

However, the film received negative reactions from audiences and reviewers in the same way as Indian 2. Except for a few sections of the audience that hailed the technical excellence, Thug Life received a unanimous negative response from all over.

A few netizens and fans say that the second film syndrome worked against Kamal Haasan for Indian 2 and Thug Life.

Aamir Khan and Lokesh Kanagaraj to join hands for a Superhero Film

For a few weeks, there were rumors that Aamir would return as the alien in a sequel to his 2014 blockbuster PK. But the actor dismissed the rumors during a recent media interaction. As per Bollywood media reports, he said, “PK 2 is a rumor. I don’t know anything about it.”

Surprisingly, the actor said he would work on a superhero project with Lokesh Kanagaraj, the talented director who scored blockbusters like Vikram, Kaithi, and Leo. “Lokesh and I are working on a film. It belongs to the superhero genre. It’s a big-scale action film and will go on floors in the second half of 2026,” Aamir added.

Aamir Khan replaces Suriya in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Dream Project

Initially, this film was supposed to be made with Suriya as the lead, but it got delayed due to various reasons, and now, Lokesh Kanagaraj and Aamir Khan will collaborate for this superhero film.

Currently, Lokesh is working on the script, and he will narrate it to Aamir Khan once it’s ready. Although the film is in its initial phases, both the actor and director seem very excited about the idea. If everything proceeds smoothly and Aamir approves the script, the film, which doesn’t have a title yet, is expected to start production in mid-2026..

Thug Life premiere talk: Blockbuster or Blunder?

0

Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and Simbu released today amidst huge hype and expectations. The film also has the collaboration of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after nearly 3 decades. However, the film opened with below-par reports from the early shows itself. This is surely a big jolt to the team.

The First half of the film is said to be average, and the second half went downhill with unanimous below-par to bad reports. The emotions, elevations and few scenes said to have not worked well with a dragged narration. If the same word of mouth forms up even for the regular shows then it will be a huge letdown for the epic combo.

The team must also be ready to take the trolling which already happened when the Trailer released. The film must gross nearly 300 crores to become a blockbuster, and the task looks very big now.

Thug Life Review: Disappoints Bigtime

0

Movie Name: Thug Life
Rating: 2/5
Cast:
Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Abhirami, Nasser, Joju George, and others
Director: Mani Ratnam
Produced By:
Kamal Haasan R. Mahendran Mani Ratnam Siva Ananth Udhayanidhi Stalin
Release Date: 5th June 2025

Thug Life, the latest action drama, comes under the combination of Legendary actor Kamal Haasan and Master Filmmaker Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades. The film raised enough curiosity among fans, and the day 1 bookings gave a hint of a decent opening at the box office. Let’s check out whether the film stands up to the expectations in our review.

Story:

Thug Life features Rangaraya Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan), an influential gangster. It delves into his reasons for raising Amar (Simbu), the conflicts in their circle, and the pressures that upend Sakti’s life.

Performances:

Kamal Haasan plays Rangaraya Sakthivel and performs adequately, yet his impact on the film is minimal. Simbu looks good on screen, but his character lacks power and value.

Trisha gets wasted in an insignificant role, while Aishwarya Lekshmi makes her presence in a short but crucial role. The performances of Nasser, Abhirami, Tanikella Bharani, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, and Ali Fazal suffer from subpar writing.

Analysis:

Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life explores relationship insecurities in a gangster setting. The setup seems ordinary, but the tensions between Sakthi and his brother, especially with Amar, could make it exciting.

The opening episode from the 90s suggests a captivating drama ahead. However, the screenplay is too random and does not establish the characters properly. Intensity increases slightly before the interval, hinting at a promising second half.

The second half begins normally but declines with each scene. Sakthivel’s return lacks intrigue and his revenge feels dull. The most important confrontation between Sakthivel and Amar is not satisfying because of the fact that the taking is too confusing. The pivotal twist at the climax is effective, but the ensuing drama lacks impact, resulting in a weak finale.

Positives:

  • Initial 15-20 Minutes
  • Visuals
  • A few Good Dialogues here is there

Negatives:

  • Lacks Proper Emotional Highs
  • Poor Writing/Characters
  • Clueless Second Half
  • Unsatisfying Climax
  • Not so good use of Songs

Thug Life Movie Review and Verdict:

Thug Life ends up as a clichéd revenge tale. The first half is decent, but the second half is terribly disappointing. This film is far away from what you’d expect from the famous combo of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam.

All you need to know about Thug Life – Censor, budget and bookings

0

Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan is gearing up for release on June 5th worldwide. The film has also finished the promotional activities, and the censor has also been completed. The Censor Board awarded the film a U/A certificate with a runtime of 165 minutes and 42 seconds, i.e., 2 hours 45 minutes and 42 seconds.

The budget of the film is said to be between 200-220 crores and this includes no remuneration of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam who also happen to be the Producers of the film. This budget has been recovered from the Non-theatrical rights, Digital rights, Satellite and Audio rights.

Leading OTT platform, Netflix, has bagged the digital rights of the film. Vijay TV took the satellite rights, and Saregama bagged the Audio rights. Makers are releasing the film on their own by taking advances from Distributors as they are comfortable with the Non-theatrical deal. The team is also highly confident about the film, and if it grosses more than 300 crores, then it can compensate for the remunerations of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam.

Thug Life has also been carrying nearly 10 crores advances sales in India alone and $1.15 Million in the overseas market.
