Having gained praise with his debut film Awe (2018), Prasanth Varma went on to direct Kalki (2019) and Zombie Reddy (2021) before scoring a breakthrough hit with Hanu-Man (2024). Made on a modest budget of ₹40 crore, the Teja Sajja-starrer turned out to be a record-breaking success at the box office, grossing over ₹300 crore worldwide.
Telugu Cinema’s Next Big Thing
The critical acclaim, which included two National Awards, catapulted Varma to overnight stardom. Within weeks, he became one of the most sought-after filmmakers in the country, reportedly pitching scripts to stars such as Prabhas, Ranveer Singh, and Karthi. The success of Hanu-Man also elevated expectations surrounding his future projects.
Capitalizing on the momentum, Varma is known to have gone on a signing spree with multiple production houses to write and direct films under the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). This included Jai Hanu-Man, a direct sequel to Hanu-Man (2024), and another project intended to launch Mokshagna, the son of Nandamuri Balakrishna.
A Series of Big-Budget Projects
Besides these, he is also presenting Mahakali, a female-oriented superhero film, and Adhira, a project introducing the son of RRR producer D. V. V. Danayya. While Varma initially appeared to have ambitious plans for the PVCU, fate seems to have had different plans. Several of the announced projects have yet to make meaningful progress.
His next directorial, Jai Hanu-Man, has reportedly been in development for more than two years, with no clarity regarding its release timeline. The project he intended to make with Ranveer Singh was reportedly shelved due to creative differences, while the much-anticipated Mokshagna debut is also said to have hit roadblocks if industry rumors are to be believed.
All in all, Prasanth Varma’s tale of a promising debut followed by an enviable breakthrough appears to have reached a standstill. Whether he can regain the momentum and bring his ambitious cinematic universe to life remains to be seen. Only time can alter the trajectory of his career.
