Akhanda 2 1st Week Box Office Collections

After a below-average opening weekend, Akhanda 2 witnessed a sharp drop in collections on weekdays. In its first week, the film collected around ₹57 crore share worldwide, including GST from the Andhra and Nizam regions. The worldwide gross for the first week stands at approximately ₹97 crore.

Initially, the film was sold at a business value of ₹125 crore. This was later revised to ₹110 crore, and finally, the producers received around ₹95 crore from distributors. At any of these business values, the film is turning out to be a major loss venture, as Akhanda 2’s collections disappointed everyone.

Akhanda 2 was expected to take Balakrishna to a new level, but shockingly, the film has broken Balakrishna’s success streak, as well as the successful combination of Balakrishna and director Boyapati Srinu. It also appears to have brought an end to the Akhanda franchise.

Dhurandhar Becomes India’s 17th 500 Cr Film

OTT Crash Turning Single-Part Films into Multi-Part Franchises

In today’s market, even for films with big stars and massive combinations, OTT platforms are offering deals only in the ₹125–150 crore range. Unless a film is truly exceptional, this has become a major reason why producers see huge risks in spending ₹500–600 crore on a single-part movie. To reduce that risk, many are now turning their projects into multi-part films or franchises.

Even if a film grosses more than ₹800 crore in theaters, it does not guarantee breakeven when the budget crosses ₹600 crore. Producers often expect OTT deals of over ₹250 crore, but platforms are offering only half of that amount, and they are linking payments to theatrical performance as well.

Because of this, many films that were initially planned as single-part releases are being split into multiple parts. If the story is strong and has scope, franchises can work well and deliver big results. But there have also been failures where audiences felt the story could have been told in one film, and splitting it into parts was unnecessary.

This shift in OTT negotiations and deals is driving producers to make sequels and multi-part movies. But when decisions are made purely for economics and not for storytelling, it risks backfiring and disappointing audiences.

The main reason for the conflict in the sequel, Akhanda 2, revolves around the character of Janani. In the original film, Akhanda (2021), Aghora promises Janani he will return if she’s in danger. Therefore, for such an important role, the makers of Akhanda 2 considered casting Sitara Ghattamaneni, Mahesh Babu’s daughter.

The news that Mahesh Babu’s daughter, Sitara Ghattamaneni, was the first choice for the role of Balakrishna’s daughter Janani in Akhanda 2 is currently going viral on social media. But the makers’ idea did not work out, and later, they also tried to bring daughters of Tamil actor Suriya and actress Laya, but eventually, it went to Bollywood actress Harshaali Malhotra.

Sitara missing the Janani character is good only because she is the daughter of Mahesh Babu; the fans and audiences always want her to debut with a great role and a successful film. 

While Janani’s character is crucial to Akhanda 2, it unfortunately lacks performance scope. The characterization also seems exaggerated, portraying a 17-year-old as a top DRDO scientist with an IQ of 226 who even discovers a vaccine for a deadly virus. These aspects didn’t resonate well with the audience.

No Akhanda 3: Akhanda 2 Ends the Franchise

Akhanda 2 was released in theaters with massive hype, but the film failed to meet audience expectations and is heading towards losses in several regions. Because of this, the makers have decided to stop their plans for a third installment.

Director Boyapati Srinu had left a lead at the end of Akhanda to continue the story in Akhanda 2. Since the first film was a super blockbuster, the team aimed even higher with the sequel, targeting pan-India markets. Before release, they had announced that the franchise would not end with Akhanda 2 and promised parts 3, 4, 5, and more. 

In fact, the closing of Akhanda 2 teased Akhanda 3. But the poor performance of the Akhanda sequel has now brought the franchise to an end, and there will be no third part.

That said, though Akhanda 2 failed, this is not the end of the Balakrishna–Boyapati Srinu combination. The duo is planning to collaborate again in the future, but not with the Akhanda series. Instead, they are expected to work on a social-commercial entertainer, similar to their earlier hits like Simha and Legend.

Yellamma Announcement With Glimpse

Director Venu Yeldandi, who won wide acclaim for his debut film Balagam, is finally moving forward with his long-awaited second project, Yellamma. The film has faced several delays over the years. At one point, Nani was set to lead it, and later went to Nithin, but after much back and forth, the project has now landed as the acting debut of music director Devi Sri Prasad (DSP) in the lead role.

Since Balagam is regarded as one of the finest films in recent Telugu cinema, expectations are naturally very high for Venu’s next venture. The team is currently preparing a special glimpse video to officially announce Yellamma with DSP as the hero.

The shoot is expected to begin early next year. There is also strong curiosity about the choice of the lead actress. Earlier, names like Sai Pallavi and Keerthy Suresh were considered, but reports suggest that neither will be part of the film. It remains to be seen which actress the team finalizes.

Yellamma will be produced by Dil Raju, adding further weight to the project. With DSP stepping into acting and Venu Yeldandi returning after Balagam, the film is already one of the most anticipated Telugu releases in the coming year.
