Thunivu and Varisu were the two major Kollywood releases for Pongal ending the long wait to see Ajith and Vijay clashing yet again at the box office. The performances of both these Kollywood stars were well appreciated and the movies received mostly mixed reviews with particular applause for the lead star’s performances.
Both Thunivu and Varisu got off to an excellent start at the box office. In Tamil Nadu, Thunivu has taken the lead because of a bigger release and collected a solid c 23Cr+ on opening day. Varisu, on the other hand, collected 20Cr+ on the opening day.
In Kerala, which is Vijay’s strong zone, Varisu took the lead by a big margin collecting 4.5Cr gross approx, while Thunivu collected in the range of 1.4 Cr. Coming to Karnataka, the Vijay starrer stood strong and took the lead and collected around Rs 4.5 crore while the Ajith starrer collected in the range of 3.7 Cr.
Varisu held the lead in the rest of India as well and did better than Thunivu. In overall collections, Varisu has the opening advantage and is ahead by a small lead of around Rs 1.5 Cr on day 1.
