A Slow Start in Theatres
Ranabaali released in theatres on October 16 for Dasara, with Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead. Going into the release, the film didn’t have much pre-release buzz, and the initial word of mouth was mixed.
That made many expect the film to struggle at the box office. It opened with around ₹16.5 Cr gross worldwide on Day 1.
The Dasara Turnaround
But the film found its feet. With the advantage of the Dasara festival holidays, Ranabaali took a good turnaround and held better than expected.
It also stood its ground against strong competition, as it released in the same window as Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, which went on to create records across the country.
Ranabaali Box Office Collections (Gross, Approx.)
- India: Closer to ₹70 Cr
- Overseas: ₹12 Cr
- Worldwide Total: ₹80 Cr+
Reasonable Run, Overseas Hurt
Overall, Ranabaali did reasonably well at the box office, given its low pre-release buzz and opening reports. The India business, close to ₹70 Cr gross, kept the film afloat.
Overseas, though, was a weak spot. With around ₹12 Cr gross, the film fell short of the record price paid for its overseas rights.
A Second Chance on OTT
Now, the film gets a second innings on Netflix. With a release in five languages, Ranabaali can reach a much wider audience across India and around the world.
Period dramas often find new fans on OTT, and audiences who skipped the film in theatres may give it a try at home. Whether the OTT response turns out better or weaker than the theatrical run is what everyone will be watching.
