Rahul Sankrityan
About
Rahul Sankrityan is an Indian film director and screenwriter working in Telugu cinema, celebrated for successfully blending genre storytelling with distinct thematic ambition. Originally hailing from the Rayalaseema region, with roots in Kurnool and Anantapur, his love for history and storytelling is deeply tied to the rich culture and heritage of his hometown.
Before entering mainstream filmmaking, he worked as a software engineer at an IT company in Hyderabad. To stay connected to his passion for cinema, he started a film club at his workplace called “24 Frames,” where he and his colleagues made short films, screened movies, and held endless discussions. His early recognition came from winning an award at the Maa TV short film competition for his short film Chitra I Love You. This victory boosted his confidence and helped mark him as a distinctive emerging voice even prior to his feature career.
Overcoming Adversity and Breaking In
In 2013, a serious accident near Jubilee Hills Check Post served as a major turning point in his life. Realizing the brevity of life, he chose to leave the security of his corporate job, resign from his position, and commit to filmmaking full-time.
However, his ideas initially met with skepticism from producers. Undeterred, he took a massive risk and self-produced his independent feature film directorial debut, the horror/psychological thriller The End (2014). Following this, his true breakthrough into mainstream commercial cinema came with his 2018 Telugu movie, Taxiwaala, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Priyanka Jawalkar. The film’s success firmly established him as a director capable of packaging unconventional ideas within a commercially viable format, bridging the gap between experimental concepts and mass appeal.
Critical Acclaim and Ambitious Storytelling
He further expanded his scope with the 2021 period romantic action drama Shyam Singha Roy. Partly set against the backdrop of Kolkata in the 1970s, this reincarnation-driven film tells the story of Vasu, an aspiring director who experiences visions of his previous life as a fierce Bengali social reformer. The highly acclaimed film engages with powerful themes of artistic identity, caste oppression, and legacy. The project also sparked some online discourse regarding certain intimate sequences, particularly a scene involving a young female actor that some viewers interpreted as uncomfortable within the narrative.
