Gully Rowdy review: Formulaic commercial flick

0

Movie: Gully Rowdy
Rating: 2/5
Cast: Sundeep Kishan, Neha Shetty, Rajendra Prasad, Posani Krishna Murali, Vennela Kishore
Director: G Nageshwar Reddy
Produced By: Kona Venkat and MVV Satyanarayana
Release Date: 17th September 2021

Sundeep Kishan and Neha Shetty starrer Gully Rowdy finally hit the screens today. The film has been promoted by the makers as an out-and-out commercial comedy entertainer with a good dose of action. With an ensemble cast of Rajendra Prasad, Posani Krishna Murali, and Vennela Kishore, the film and the trailers looked promising. Is it able to live up to its promise? Let’s check out

Story: Vasu played by Sundeep Kishan is the titular Gully Rowdy. The story follows his journey where he was raised in a rowdy family and is now confronted with the biggest challenge of his life in the form of antagonist Raghu Naik (Bobby Simha). Can Vasu solve the troubles of Venkata Rao (Rajendra Prasad) whose land is illegally occupied? What methods does Vasu use to settle this issue forms the plot?

Performance: A formulaic movie generally doesn’t offer much to the lead in terms of performances and Sundeep Kishan is no different. He has all the usual tasks to do like fight the goons, dance to songs, and romance the heroine and he does a fine job. There’s nothing much special about him here. Neha Shetty barely manages some presence and like many commercial movies, the actress’ presence makes no difference to the movie. Bobby Simha plays a familiar role of a menacing police officer with ill intentions and is aptly cast but with no scope for performance. It is Rajendra Prasad who is the best of the lot. He lights up the mood with his performance and one-liners and is dependable as ever in comedy as well as emotional scenes. Vennela Kishore is underutilized and his character could have been written better.

Analysis: The movie doesn’t take itself seriously and is meant for a light watch and the director keeps the proceedings that way. Gully Rowdy follows an outdated format where the action and proceedings of the story are driven through comedy. The comedy blocks don’t work in their entirety and are funny in bits. The rushed writing and age-old plot points make the film look silly at times.

Plus Points:

Rajendra Prasad

Runtime

Minus Points:

Cliched writing

Slow narration in the first half

Undercooked charecters

Verdict: Gully Rowdy is not a film that will challenge you and neither did the makers ever claim so. It was promoted as a commercial entertainer and stays that way. However, the cliched story and formulaic writing give you a sense of deja vu every now and then. The film has got an open ground with no major release this week and it could have been a great success had the makers focussed on the story more than the promotions.

Search on for leading lady in Pawan Kalyan film

0

Pawan Kalyan’s Bheemla Nayak is currently in the filming stage. Set for a Sankranti release, 40 percent of the film is done with Nithya Menen as one of the leads. The film’s teaser and the title song have been well received but the makers have now faced a major speed breaker. They are finding it tough to finalize another female lead.

The names of Sai Pallavi and Aishwarya Rajesh did the rounds, and the filmmakers had even held talks with them. However, the second Covid-19 wave and subsequent lockdowns have made it difficult for the makers to get another actress whose dates suit the film’s schedule.

The latest buzz is that Malayalam actress Samyuktha Menon’s name is under consideration. Talks have been initiated, but everything depends on her dates matching the film’s schedule. Pawan Kalyan meanwhile is also shooting for Hari Hara Veera Mallu. Post the completion of this Krish film, he will be seen in Bhavadeeyudu Bhagat Singh by Harish Shankar

Maestro review: A crisp thriller with subtle changes

0

Movie: Maestro
Rating: 2.75/5
Cast: Nithiin, Tamannah, Nabha Natesh, Jisshu Sen Gupta, Naresh
Director: Merlapaka Gandhi
Produced By: Sudhakar Reddy and Nikitha Reddy under Shresht Movies
Release Date: 17th September 2021

After a series of flops such as Check and Rang De, Nithiin is hoping to get the elusive success out of his dark comedy crime thriller – Maestro. It is a remake of 2018 Ayushman Khurana starter Andhadhun. Andhadhun was a massive success in Hindi and won 3 National awards. The film won the best film and screenplay while Ayushman received the Best Actor that year. Let’s find out if Nithiin is able to replicate the success and if third time’s a charm for him in 2021.

Story: Maestro is the story of a blind pianist who unintentionally gets caught in a series of murders. Adding to this is an organic trafficking angle that adds great value and turns to the story. Maestro has some engaging moments where the story takes some interesting movements. The makers have stayed true to the original and haven’t made many changes in the crime angle which is the core part of the plot.

Performance: Nithiin has done a decent job as Arun- the blind pianist. However, comparisons are bound to crop up in a remake and his performance isn’t as convincing in some parts. He has done a good job in terms of expressing vulnerability due to his handicap but the conniving and wicked angle that Ayushman displayed brilliantly in Andhadhun is missing here. Tamannah has got a lot of screen time and does a great job with a grey character. She has got a terrific screen presence in the film and is quite convincing as a cold-hearted and cunning woman. The supporting actors such as Jisshu Sen Gupta, Mangli and Harsha Vardhan add great value to the film. Nabha Natesh has got nothing much to do as the film progresses and is just limited to few scenes here and there.

Analysis: Maestro is a faithful remake and stays true to the core concept of the original. While the casting and writing are on point, there are a couple of oddities that might concern the viewer. The film for some reason is set in Goa where all the characters fluently speak Telugu. This change of location makes no value addition to the plot and it could have been as well set in the Telugu states to provide authenticity. The makers have also chosen to dumb down certain portions in order to spoon-feed to the audience. This might be an eyesore for some as thrillers are meant to involve the audience and help them build their own narrative. The writing is crisp and technically the movie is quite strong. Mahati Swara Sagar’s BGM is one of the highlights of the film.

Plus Points:

Runtime

BGM

Crisp Screenplay

Minus Points:

Unnecessary changes and additions

Tamannah’s own dubbing

Initial lag in the first half

Verdict: Maestro is an interesting watch for the weekend, especially if you haven’t watched the original. While the movie after initial lag of 15-20 minutes gets into the gripping zone, the film towards the end would leave you with some questions and not for good reasons. You end up thinking why is it set in Goa? Why Nithiin acts holier than thou especially in a crime-laden world?. These are some of the gaping holes in an otherwise decent dark comedy thriller. The movie picks up well towards the second half and provides solid thrills. Maestro is definitely Nithiin’s best of the year.

Bigg Boss 5 opening episode registers average TRPs

0

The much-awaited Bigg Boss 5 got off to a start earlier this month amidst great anticipations. The show which has already seen its first elimination was expected to receive record TRPs. Nagarjuna is hosting this season as well.

However, much to everyone’s surprise, the opening episode recorded a TRP of just 15.70 which is not quite the figure makers were looking for. In contrast to this the Bigg Boss Season one first episode had 16.18 TRP which fell to 15.05 for season 2. The third season saw a massive hike in the opening episode TRP with 17.9 while the fourth season opener recorded a whopping 18.5 TRP.

This fall in the Bigg Boss 5 is being attributed to lesser-known faces as contestants. It needs to be seen if the show manages to pick up the momentum in the coming days

Tuck Jagadish creates a monster record

0

Nani’s Tuck Jagadish that released on Amazon Prime Video has just achieved an impressive feat. While the movie released digitally amidst mixed reviews, its viewership is increasing day by day. The family drama directed by Shiva Nirvana is now the all-time most-watched Telugu movie on Amazon Prime Video.

This is an incredible feat for a film that was released just a week ago. The festive season and long weekend surely have helped the viewership of the film.  The film co-stars Ritu Varma, Aishwarya Rajesh, Jagapathi Babu and Nasar among others.

Both director Shiva Nirvana and Nani were confident of the film’s output and had said prior to the release that the film is a perfect mix of emotions and commercial elements. The film was well appreciated for its production values and visuals while many felt the story to be routine. Despite the mixed talk, the film becoming the most-watched Telugu film is indeed an incredible feat.

Naga Chaitanya says a strict NO

0

Naga Chaitanya started promotions for his upcoming film Love Story recently. The actor held a small media meet ahead of the film’s release. He further gave strict instructions to the media to not ask any personal questions and that he would only talk about Love Story

Sekhar Kammula is directing this romantic drama and it co-stars Sai Pallavi. The actor will be playing the role of Revanth, who hails from a village in Telangana and opens a Zumba centre. Having grown up in Hyderabad and Chennai, Chaitanya admits that Kammula’s story ushered him into a new territory

“We don’t talk enough about small-town issues. Telugu cinema has been mostly glamorous and larger than life. There’s been a shift with films such as Care of Kancharapalem and Middle Class Melodies, but we don’t do enough. I was eager to be a part of Sekhar’s story and he took me through an incredible journey,” explains Chaitanya.

Kammula and two other writers from the team coached Chaitanya on the Telangana dialect. Filming in Armoor in Nizamabad district, he says, helped him further understand Revanth’s world.

The film is set to release on September 24th and a grand pre-release event is planned in Hyderabad on September 19th.
