Vikram Review: Lokesh Kangaraj and Kamal Haasan deliver on promise

0

Movie: Vikram
Rating: 2.75/5
Cast: Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathy, Suriya, Gayathrie Shankar, Narain
Director: Lokesh Kangaraj
Produced By: R Mahendran, Kamal Haasan
Release Date: June 3rd, 2022

Kamal Haasan’s action thriller Vikram is this week’s other big release. The film created massive buzz just with its star cast announcement that features powerhouse performers such as Vijay Sethupathy and Fahadh Faasil. Lokesh Kangaraj, who is on a career-high after delivering back-to-back blockbusters like Master and Kaithi is quite confident of the content of Vikram and is raring to score a hat-trick. What’s Vikram all about and did it deliver on the hype? Check it out.

Story: Much like Kaithi, Vikram’s story starts with a missing consignment of drugs. Amar (Fahadh) is entrusted with the investigation and during the process, his paths cross with Karnan ( Kamal Haasan ) and Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathy) a local drug lord. How are the three characters linked and what happens with the investigation? What is the real deal with Karnan is what Vikram explores over the course of the next 2 hours and 50 minutes.

Performances: Kamal Haasan is back with a bang and gives his fans and movie lovers what they have been eagerly waiting for. Despite the age catching up, he is terrific in the action scenes and gives one of the most intense and towering performances of his career. His intense gaze and ability to do a lot without putting much effort make his performance quite entertaining. Fahad Faasil is dependable as ever and has got quite a chunky part in the first half of the film. His character is easily the most intriguing one of the three and is well sketched out by Lokesh Kangaraj. Vijay Sethupathy completes this powerhouse performer’s trio and once again plays the antagonist with terrific ease. There’s a bit of humour and a bit of crazy energy around his character and he balances these two with great ease. Arjun Das, Narain, Gayathrie Shankar all play their roles as required and have little to perform in a world dominated by Kamal Haasan, Fahadh, and Vijay Sethupathy. Suriya as Rolex is another major high point of the movie and fans will surely love his cameo.

Analysis: Vikram is an effort by Lokesh Kangaraj to build a cinematic universe. The film has enough elements connecting to his previous film Kaithi. The director has made quite a conscious decision by placing certain easter eggs and callbacks to his other works. He has done a terrific job at balancing the three characters with each having their eccentricities and insecurities. Casting and performances are top-notch. However, the film gets slightly dull in the second half and longer runtime might test your patience levels.

Plus Points:

  • Technically top notch
  • Lead Cast
  • BGM
  • Lokesh Kangaraj direction

Minus Points:

  • Runtime
  • Lack of emotional connect
  • Editing

Verdict: Vikram is a movie that has all the potential to be a mass favourite as well as a cinephile’s delight. Lokesh Kangaraj’s efforts to create his own cinematic universe are quite exciting and you will definitely see some parallels as well as the connection between Kaithi and Vikram. This is an interesting prospect and will be definitely further explored in his future films. Vikram is certainly a movie to be enjoyed on the big screen and can be added to your weekend’s to-do list.

Major Review: Adivi Sesh gives career best performance in this technically brilliant biopic

0

Movie: Major
Rating: 3/5
Cast: Adivi Sesh, Shobhita Dhulipalla, Saiee Manjarekar, Prakash Raj, Revathy
Director: Sashi Kiran Tikka
Produced By: Mahesh Babu, Sharath Chandra, Anurag Reddy
Release Date: June 3rd, 2022

Adivi Sesh’s action drama Major is finally infront of audience after months of wait. Major is a biopic of Late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and it explores the life and origins of Major Sandeep. Right from the release of the first look, the film was successful in creating massive interest and with technically brilliant visuals and slick action episodes in teaser and trailer, the film created a great first impression. Does Major actually pack the punch that it promised? Lets find out.

Story: Based on the life of martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Major celebrates the heroics of the army officer’s life, not only depicting his death at the 26/11 Mumbai attacks but also tracing his journey and embracing the spirit with which he lived. Adivi Sesh in the titular role and Prakash Raj and Revathy as his parents form the backbone of this story that explores some unknown facets of the Major Sandeep’s life.

Performances: Adivi Sesh as Major Sandeep is a classic case of perfect casting. He has given a career best performance and does 100% justice to his role. Be it action sequences or emotional scenes, Sesh performs with ease and has definitely announced his arrival as a dependable performer. Only the teenage portions look slightly out of place but they are well compensated by the other elements of the film. Prakash Raj is the soul of the movie and his dialogues will stay in viewers minds even when they walk out of the theatre. Revathy’s terrific portrayal as a mother who has lost her son is on the point and together the trio form a great on screen family. Saiee Manjarekar as Major Sandeep’s wife has pretty limited scope and makers could have taken better care of her portions. Shobhita Dhulipalla is fine in whatever limited screenspace she is provided as a hostage at Taj Hotel.

Analysis: Despite being just above 2 hours in runtime, Major takes some time to get going and is slow to start with. However, once Major Sandeep’s character arc starts to move forward, you are in for a ride. While Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s ultimate sacrifice is a known tale to many, the movie is much more than his career in the Army. It perfectly captures inspiration behind his decision to join the Indian Army, his ambitions, and his coming of age story. Technically, the movie is brilliant and special mention must go to Sricharan Pakala for his terrific RR. Vamsi Patchipulusu’s camerawork immerses us into the world of Major and is another highlight of the film.

Plus Points:

  • Adivi Sesh’s performance
  • Screenplay
  • Technically brilliant
  • Perfect blend of action and emotions

Minus Points:

  • Slowish first half
  • Certain scenes needed better research

Verdict: Major as a movie never gets preachy and tells us the story as it its. It is not just a story of a decorated Army officer but also a touching tale of a family who sacrifised their son for the nation. Sashi Kiran Tikka has ensured the flow of the movie was quite organic and it captured the true essence of who Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was. Major is a must watch film even if you’re not a fan of action genre as it is much more than an Army film.

Movie Makers Are Killing Theatre Owners And Exhibitors

0

There is no denying that OTT has been a great boon for a lot of people. It has been of great help to producers and actors and has also been convenient for audiences who want to enjoy cinema from the comfort of their homes.

But, with the evolution of OTT, the theatre business has also taken a hit. The theatrical run of movies has dropped by a large margin. When we take a look at Telugu cinema alone, movies are failing to run for a long period.

When we track back to the 2010s, movies used to easily run for 50 days in theatres but now even a hit film is struggling to sustain for 4 weeks.

Adding to this, the makers are making massive profits with OTT platforms by releasing a film in 3-4 weeks. This is not helping the exhibitors who are suffering due to the lack of an audience. If things head in the same direction, it will only get worse and even a good film might run only for a weekend.

RRR Achieves A Rare Feat, Americans Clapping In Theatres

It has been over 2 months since the release of SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR but it is still being talked about to this day. When the film was released, the whole of India unanimously raved about the spectacular visuals, performances, and emotions in the movie.

This time as well, the raving is unanimous, but it is in foreign land. The makers decided to re-release RRR in the USA as EncoRRRe and it has turned out to be a huge success. RRR has made people flock to theatres from various parts of the USA and celebrate the vision of Rajamouli.

Ever since the screening of the film, people have not stopped praising the film. RRR was trending on Twitter thanks to the thousands of Americans tweeting in appreciation of the film.

One user wrote, “I am so grateful to encoRRRe for giving me the gift of seeing the film”. Another wrote, “This is hands down the movie of the year. The communal experience makes it even better. Please go watch it in theatres.”

The last time an Indian film received so much recognition was during Bahubali 2. It is once again Rajamouli who has lifted the pride of Indian cinema. No amount of gratitude is enough to thank him for what he has done.

Home productions have done the biggest damage to Megastar

0

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Acharya debacle has been one of the biggest in Tollywood history. The film failed to evoke any interest and ended up being a massive failure. Even critics panned the movie for being too outdated and having a sluggish screenplay. The onscreen combo of Ram Charan and Chiranjeevi was expected to set the screens on fire but the exact opposite happened.

This brings us to the curious case of Megastar Chiranjeevi’s home productions. Back in 1988 something similar happened when Rudraveena was released under Anjana Productions banner. While the film received great critical acclaim and is considered one of the cult classics of Tollywood, it was a massive commercial failure and brought great losses to the Megastar.

Acharya on the other hand ended up being the biggest box-office misfire of Tollywood. This action entertainer collected a share of Rs 41Crs during its first-weekend run and in its full run, the film has collected a share of just Rs 45.2Crs. Directed by Koratala Siva, this Konidela Productions project is the biggest disaster in Telugu Cinema as the Theatrical Rights are valued at 133Crs

Trivikram still not completed the script work for Mahesh Babu film

0

Trivikram’s last movie as director is Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. It was released in January, 2020 and went on to become a stupendous success at box office. After the success, Trivikram took a break and haven’t signed any project immediately. But it is almost two and half years now and the star director haven’t started any project yet. The writer director worked as a writer for Powerstar Pawan Kalyan’s Bheemla Nayak. But the fans are waiting for his directorial from the last two years.

After Ala vaikunthapurramuloo Trivikram has signed a film with NTR. But it was cancelled at last minute due to unknown reasons. Then the star director has approached Superstar Mahesh babu for a film. They both have signed for a film under Haarika & Hassine creations. All the superstar fans disappointed as there is no update or Title of SSMB28 released on eve of Superstar Krishna’s birthday.

As per the sources, Trivikram has not completed the full script work of SSMB 28 yet. It is heard that the director was asking more time to complete the script. Mahesh Babu will start a movie with SS Rajamouli after Trivikram’s movie. So it is supposed to be completed this year and get ready for Sankranthi release. But as the script isn’t ready yet, the chances for Sankranthi release is not possible. So the film may hit the screens in summer 2023.
