Kamal Hassan and Maniratnam both were No1 hero and directors of the Tamil industry in their prime time. But after a period they lost their craze and brand. Some of their films were not even able to collect decent numbers. Seeing their situation everyone had thought and fixed that both the legends are done and their time is over.
When everyone thought and branded them as outdated, these two legends bounced back in a way no one was expecting. The 2022 year has been a game changer for them, Vikram stood as an industry hit for Kamal Hassan and his next film is Indian-2 with Shankar, this project is now one of the craziest projects of Indian Cinema.
And after Kamal Haasan, the south Indian legendary director Maniratnam too gave a humongous blockbuster at the box office with Ponniyin Selvan-1, which eventually broke the record of Vikram in Tamil Nadu.
With the first part being such a big success, the sequel of Ponniyin Selvan is already carrying a massive buzz. Not only that, but now Maniratnam had signed his next project with none other than the superstar Rajinikanth.
There is a famous saying in cricket that form is temporary and class is permanent. This became true in the case of both Maniratnam and Kamal Hassan. Some months back no one could have imagined that they both can score big hits at the box office and now, they’re in top form with industry hits and crazy upcoming projects lined up.
Interesting thing is, Mani Ratnam had planned to make the movie Ponniyin Selvan three decades ago with Kamal Haasan. The ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ movie was planned to be made in 1989 under the direction of Mani Ratnam with actor Kamal Haasan in the lead role.
Kamal revealed this himself in an interview with ‘Kalki’ magazine. He said that Prabhu and Sathyaraj were the other main characters, PC Sriram was the cinematographer and Ilayaraja was the music director.
Somehow that project didn’t materialize and eventually, it took three decades for Maniratnam to make his dream project.
