Naga Vamsi To Produce Karthi’s Next

Producer Naga Vamsi is known for backing multiple films every year, regardless of their box-office results. Because of his consistent output, he enjoys strong support and goodwill among exhibitors. Now, he is gearing up to produce a new film with Tamil star Karthi.

Karthi’s last theatrical release, Vaa Vaathiyaar, turned out to be a major disappointment at the box office. However, the actor is now preparing for a Telugu–Tamil bilingual project. The film will be directed by Kalyan Shankar, who is known for the MAD series, and will be produced under the banner of Sithara Entertainments. Shooting is expected to begin once Karthi completes work on his current project, Marshal.

Interestingly, the same production house is also backing Suriya 46, starring Suriya. Although Funky did not receive the response the makers had hoped for, Naga Vamsi remains is set to deliver back-to-back exciting films and winning over audiences once again.

Vishal Receives Setback from Madras High Court

Tamil actor and producer Vishal has received a major setback from the Madras High Court regarding a loan payment. He has been involved in a long-standing legal dispute with Lyca Productions. He had earlier filed a petition seeking more time to repay the money he owed to Lyca Productions. 

However, the single judge dismissed his plea. Challenging this order, Vishal approached a two-judge bench, which granted an interim stay on the earlier decision but directed him to immediately deposit ₹10 crore.

Following this, Vishal filed yet another petition requesting six weeks to deposit the ₹10 crore. But the High Court bench expressed its unwillingness to grant further relief and dismissed his request. As a result, Vishal has now been directed to pay the amount without any delay.

According to reports, about three years ago, Vishal had taken a loan of ₹21.29 crore from Gopuram Films. Later, Lyca Productions stepped in and agreed to clear the loan amount on his behalf. In return, an agreement was signed granting Lyca the distribution rights of Vishal’s future films. However, when Vishal allegedly failed to honor the agreement, Lyca approached the Madras High Court.

The court then ordered that the outstanding amount be repaid with 30 percent interest. Since the payment was not made, Lyca repeatedly sought court intervention to implement the judgment. There were also requests made to ensure that Vishal’s remuneration from his current project be deposited in court.

During the hearings, Vishal’s counsel informed the court that he was facing serious financial difficulties. The case came up for hearing multiple times and was eventually transferred to another bench.

In the latest development, the court has firmly ruled that Vishal must pay the amount within the stipulated time under any circumstances. This decision has now gone viral on social media and sparked widespread discussion in the film industry.

A month ago, the Telangana High Court told the state government that any notifications hiking the prices of movie tickets must be issued 90 days before the release of the film. But still, the upcoming summer biggies of Telugu films have not requested or announced any updates regarding the hikes.

Films like Peddi, Ustaad Bhagat Singh, and Toxic are slated for release this summer, and they certainly want to release with a hike in ticket prices along with extra show permissions. Now, the biggest question is how they will obtain their requests.

As said above, the Telangana High Court has already mandated that any order from the government regarding hiking the prices of movie tickets must be announced at least 90 days before release. However, even though big films are slated for release this summer, they are not showing much concern about this.

This raises an important question: how will producers or Nizam distributors now obtain permissions for ticket hikes or additional special shows if the 90-day advance rule is strictly enforced?

The biggest challenge for small- and medium-budget films is the post-Sankranti slowdown. After the festive season, audiences usually stay away from theaters until the summer. 

To draw crowds during this period, a film needs either unanimously positive word of mouth or strong pre-release buzz. Because people watch multiple films for Sankranti, and exam time starts for the students, families will not easily come to theaters till the summer season.

This year, after the Sankranthi releases, not a single film has managed to register a double-digit gross in the Telugu states.

Court Order Against Ilaiyaraaja

The Delhi High Court passed an order that restrains the veteran music composer, Ilaiyaraaja from using the songs/musical works of which Saregama, the music company, owns the rights. 

An interim ban has been imposed on Ilaiyaraaja from using the songs of 134 films that are under the ownership of the Saregama company. The court has issued an interim injunction preventing the use of songs from 134 films released between 1976 and 2001.

Saregama approached the Court and argued that it has agreements with the producers of several films released between 1976 and 2001, and that it holds the copyright to the underlying musical and literary works, which Ilaiyaraaja cannot use.

Reportedly, Saregama and Ilaiyaraaja are already fighting another copyright case over the Tamil popular song ” En INiya Pon Nilave,” and the company won that case in the High Court.

CBFC Tightens Rules: Film Titles Facing Mandatory Changes

Suhas was all set to drop his new movie, Hey Bhagawan, but the Censor Board had some issues, so they had to change the title to Hey Balwanth. The new tightening of rules by the CBFC is creating trouble for Telugu films in recent times.

In recent weeks, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly been mandating title changes as part of the censor procedure, putting Telugu Films in a difficult position just days before release.

Censor Board’s Behavior Annoys Telugu Filmmakers

One of the latest examples is Couple Friendly, starring Santosh Sobhan and Manasa Varanasi. The team was advised to change the film’s title to secure a U/A certificate. But they chose to retain the original title and instead accepted an ‘A’ certificate, as they believed changing the name at the last minute would create confusion among audiences and affect the film’s recall value.

As said above, Suhas’s Hey Bhagawan, which is set for a theatrical release on February 20th, was renamed Hey Balwanth because of objections from the censor board. Chaiwala became Nawabs Cafe, and a few months before, Vanara was retitled Vana Veera. With more films reportedly facing similar scrutiny, concerns are growing within the industry about creative freedom and the increasing trend of title-level intervention by the CBFC.
