Director Vignesh Shivan has finally opened up about the behind-the-scenes struggles faced by his latest film Love Insurance Kompany (LIK), revealing the massive production issues the project went through before making it to theatres.
Speaking about the film’s journey, Vignesh Shivan said that LIK was initially signed under RKFI, but the project did not move forward for nearly 10 months. Later, Seven Screen Studio came on board and revived the film.
OTT Market Crash and Budget Reductions
The real trouble began after the first shooting schedule when the OTT market reportedly crashed, which badly affected the film’s financial planning.
According to Vignesh, the movie was first planned on a grand ₹210 crore budget. But due to the changing market situation, the budget had to be reduced step by step—first to ₹150 crore, and later brought down to under ₹100 crore.
“At one point, producer Lalith sir was unable to arrange finance because of the market crash,” Vignesh revealed.
Nayanthara’s Financial Support Saved the Film
The most emotional part of his comments was about Nayanthara’s support during the crisis. The filmmaker shared that the actress stepped in and invested her own money into the project.
He said the amount came from the advance she received for Mookuthi Amman. More importantly, Vignesh recalled her words of encouragement: “Don’t compromise on quality, do whatever you want to do.” He added that everyone involved stood by the film and helped it survive the difficult phase.
Legal Troubles Over LIC Title
Another interesting revelation was about the film’s title. The movie was originally supposed to be called “LIC”, short for Love Insurance Company. But the makers reportedly ran into legal trouble over the name.
Vignesh said that LIC claimed ₹112 crore if they wanted to use the title officially, making it impossible for the team to retain the original name. “I obviously didn’t have ₹112 crores,” he said in a light-hearted manner.
Because of this, the team considered several backup options such as LIP, LIT, LIK, and LIF, before finally locking LIK.
LIK Box Office Performance
Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Krithi Shetty, and SJ Suryah, Love Insurance Kompany hit theatres on April 10 after multiple postponements and had a decent opening weekend at the box office. Recent trade reports suggest the film has collected ₹45 crore worldwide in five days.
Despite the steady numbers, the film is heading towards a failure. It also ends the hat-trick hit streak of Pradeep Ranganathan.
For Vignesh Shivan, though, LIK now stands as more than just a film—it is a project that survived many struggles, including financial setbacks, title issues, and market crashes, powered largely by the support of his team and Nayanthara.
