Tollywood Delivers 500Cr Gross for 2024 Sankranti: All-Time Biggest Sankranti Ever

Sankranti season is one of the most eagerly awaited ones for film lovers and filmmakers. Every major production house and hero tries to target this season for release as it brings a series of holidays and family walk-ins. Sankranthi 2024, like every year was a well-contested one with Guntur Kaaram, Hanuman, Saindhav, and Naa Saami Ranga released during the festive season. This year emerged as the all-time biggest Sankranti for Tollywood

Till now 2020 Sankranti was the biggest ever for Tollywood. Ala vaikunthapuuramuloo, Sarileru Neekevvaru, Entha Manchivaadavuraa were released for sankranti. Ala Vaikunthapuuramuloo and Sarileru Neekevvaru delivered huge numbers and emerged as non-Baahubali top-grossers in Telugu.

These Sankranti 4 films were released and out of these, Hanuman delivered huge numbers with around 290Cr gross. After Hanuman, Guntur Kaaram delivered good numbers with more than 180Cr gross, Naa Saami Ranga posted decent numbers and Saindhav failed at the box office. Both these movies together posted around Rs 55Cr gross.

Put together, all these movies collected Rs 525Cr gross making it the biggest Sankranti ever by crossing 2020’s Sankranti. 2020’s Sankranti delivered closer to 500Cr gross. But if we consider only the Telugu language collections, 2020 Sankranti is still the biggest in Telugu cinema history. Combined all languages-wise, 2024 is the biggest.

Anyone with a basic idea of trade knows that a film’s performance on its first Monday is crucial for becoming a ‘hit’. In simple terms, it’s a litmus test for the project at the box office.

Eagle (2024), an action drama film starring ‘Mass Maharaja’ Ravi Teja, received a lukewarm response from audiences and critics post-release. Despite the low buzz, the film posted decent opening numbers at the box office. However, as predicted by trade experts, it witnessed a huge drop in footfalls on the first weekday (Monday) worldwide and is headed towards a cost-failure. Weak promotions, Ravi Teja’s present form, and mixed word-of-mouth could be the main reasons for the film’s crash at the ticket window.

Directed by Karthik Ghattamaneni, the film’s breakeven mark stands at a modest 23 crore INR. Recovering just 50% of the investment so far, the film is headed towards a major flop at the box office. Ravi Teja, who’s been facing continuous setbacks lately, has begun the year with yet another failure. It’s high time for the actor to take a break and reflect on the mistakes he made in terms of script selection.

The makers of Mega Prince Varun Tej’s most-awaited patriotic film Operation Valentine are leaving no stone unturned to promote the movie from the beginning. As the release date is fast approaching, they have intensified their promotional activities.

In a heartfelt tribute to the Heroes for their supreme sacrifice, team Operation Valentine will visit the Pulwama memorial site tomorrow, 14th February, to honour the eternal legacy of our brave soldiers.

The Pulwama attack occurred on 14th February in 2019, when a convoy of vehicles carrying Indian security personnel on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was attacked by a vehicle-borne suicide bomber. The attack killed 40 CRPF personnel.

This Air Force action that celebrates the might of India is inspired by true events. It is a patriotic, edge-of-the-seat entertainer and will showcase the indomitable spirits of our Air Force heroes on the frontlines and the challenges they faced as they fought one of the biggest, fiercest aerial attacks that India has ever seen.

Releasing in Hindi and Telugu, this visual extravaganza marks the Hindi film debut of Varun Tej, introducing him as an Indian Air Force pilot. Manushi Chhillar will be seen in the role of a radar officer.

After the massive success of the 2022 release ‘Major’, Sony Pictures International Productions returns with yet another patriotic story that celebrates the heroes of our country and was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu language.Operation Valentine will grace the cinemas on March 1st.

It’s raining film releases on OTT this week, with some highly anticipated titles finally landing on your favorite platforms. Let’s dive into the must-watch films releasing digitally this week:

Saba Nayagan (Disney+ Hotstar, February 14th):

This Tamil rom-com starring Ashok Selvan, directed by C.S karthikeyan released in December 2023, it garnered critical acclaim and box-office success. Film is all set to stream digitally on Disney+ Hotstar from 14th February.

Salaar (Hindi) (Disney+ Hotstar, February 16th):

Prabhas’s latest action entertainer “Salaar” has already taken the box office by storm, grossing a whopping 600 crores! Film released on Netflix on 20th January in 4 south Indian languages (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam) and English. Now, Hindi audiences can finally join the excitement! The Hindi version of this high-octane thriller lands on Hotstar on February 16th.

The Kerala Story (Zee5, February 16th)

One of the most controversial films in the Indian history, The Kerala story was released in theatres worldwide in May 2023. But, due to some unknown reasons film didn’t release on OTT for almost 9 months. Finally, film is all set for digital debut on Zee5 from 16th February.

Naa Saami Ranga (Disney+ Hotstar – Feb 17th):

King Nagarjuna’s latest Sankranti hit film, Naa Saami Ranga ended up as a profitable venture for all domestic buyers. Film also stars Ashika, Allari Naresh and Raj tarun in important roles. Film was directed by Vijay Binni, produced by Srinivasa Silver screen. This Sankranti hit is all set to stream on Hotstar from 17th February.

Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s Hari hara Veera Mallu, directed by the talented Krish Jagarlamudi saw the release of the film’s First Glimpse on March 2021, igniting excitement amongst moviegoers with its revolutionary bandit hero theme. Since then, updates have been scarce and film’s was off sets from many months led to whispers of the project being shelved. But finally, The production team has put those rumors to rest with a recent tweet, assuring fans that the film is very much on track.

“Currently the High-End VFX Works are going on in places like Canada, Iran, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore,” the tweet states, building anticipation further. “A special promo is coming your way very soon from #HariHaraVeeraMallu that will have you on the edge of your seat!”

While the film’s release date remains under wraps, this news comes as a massive sigh of relief for fans and Telugu film industry (TFI) lovers who’ve been eagerly awaiting the film since its first look drop. Superstar Rajinikanth recently faced a dull period and made a strong comeback with Jailer. The movie created a new benchmark for Kollywood and it was the 1st 500Cr+ grosser Tamil language. Jailer collected 625Cr gross in all languages combined and emerged as 2023’s biggest South Indian grosser. Even films like Leo and Salaar failed to beat this.

While enjoying this massive peak, Rajinikanth was hit big by a daughter stroke. His daughter Aishwarya Rajinikanth directed Lal Salaam and Rajinikanth plays a crucial role in the film. The film did not receive any appreciation and is heading towards a huge disaster. In Telugu, it was a complete washout. Even in Tamil, it is heading towards big failure.

After a below-par opening, the film failed to take a jump on the weekend and even saw big drops in the next few days. Overall in all languages, the film just collected close to 20Cr gross on weekenda and today it completely crashed. Rajinikanth puts his stardom at a big risk with this extended cameo in Lal Salaam. If any star fails to pull minimum audiences to theatres, it will be a huge setback for them. And after the massive high of Jailer, Lal Salaam is indeed a huge shock.
