Tamil Cinema Hit Hard: Theatres Shutting Down

0

Tamil Cinema has been facing extremely tough times for quite some time. After Vijay’s Leo which was released last October, no movie has managed to perform exceptionally well. Even during Pongal, no film managed to collect 100Cr gross in Tamil Nadu. Shockingly, the combined gross of all movies released for Sankranti is less than 100Cr.

And after Sankranti, the theatres are unable to recover rents as well. Single screens are hit hard and several theatre owners have started shutting down their theatres completely. In Chennai, around 6 single screens are going to be shut down in the coming months. In Coimbatore, 5 single screens will be shut down.

Similarly, single screens in every territory are facing issues and shutting down. Around 40 single screens in Tamil Nadu are heading towards closure this year. The reason is that single screens are unable to sustain as most of the audiences prefer multiplexes even for star hero films.

Even the Distributors are demanding a higher percentage so the single screens are struggling to make the money on any film. These deals are not working out for exhibitors as theatres have ended up in deficits since October on most of the days. This trend is likely to continue and many single screens are likely to be closed in the coming years. Single screens have been a huge part of Tamil Cinema and their closure is painful for many.

Ravi Teja Scores Hat-Trick of Disasters

Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja’s Eagle was released last week to unfavourable reviews and little buzz. The film was initially scheduled for a Sankranti release but was pushed to February due to theatre allocation issues.

Directed by Karthik Ghattamaneni, this stylish action thriller is now heading to box-office failure. With Eagle’s dismal performance, Ravi Teja has now registered a hattrick of failures. The Mass Maharaja registered a resounding comeback with Dhamaka (2022) and Waltair Veerayya (2023). These back-to-back hits gave his fans a great joy. But since then he has delivered consecutive failures like Ravanasura, Tiger Nageswar Rao, and now Eagle.

The fans are now worried about Ravi Teja destroying his market. There was a time when the Mass Maharaja delivered box office numbers on par with top heroes. But with continuous flops, his market is getting impacted both theatrically and non-theatrically. His next film is with Harish Shankar titled Mr Bachchan and this is an extremely crucial film for him.

Directed by Karthik Ghattamaneni, the film also stars Anupama Parameswaran, Kavya Thapar, Navadeep, Madhoo among others. The breakeven mark stands at a modest 23 crore and the film has not even collected 50%

Can Sundeep Kishan Save Tollywood’s Buyers?

0

The month of January (Sankranthi) is undoubtedly the biggest season for Telugu films worldwide. The fact that most of TFI’s industry hits have had a release coinciding with the Sankranthi festival is a testament to that.

This year’s January, too, was no different. Some of the year’s biggest films clashed at the box office, with HanuMan emerging as the highest-grosser by a big margin. While Naa Saami Ranga was also a successful venture, Saindhav crashed badly. Guntur Karam, the most anticipated of all, received mixed-to-negative reviews upon release and emerged as an above-average venture for buyers.

Barring Venkatesh’s Saindhav, this Sankranthi has been a profitable season for distributors and exhibitors. However, everything has gone downhill since then; not a single release has posted good numbers at the box office. While films such as Game On, Kismat, Yatra 2, and Boot Cut Balaraju have completely flopped, Ambajipeta Marriage Band and True Lover despite receiving favorable reviews, underperformed on weekdays. Ravi Teja’s Eagle, the biggest release this month, registered descent opening figures but has completely crashed on weekdays, leaving buyers in losses.

The Telugu-dubbed versions of Kollywood’s Captain Miller and Lal Salaam, too, faced the same fate. All eyes are on Sundeep Kishan’s fantasy thriller flick Ooru Peru Bhairavakona, which is hitting screens this Friday, February 16th. The team is super confident about the film and screening a limited premiere show this evening. The premiers got a good response and new theatres have been added. The advance bookings are excellent. Buyers hope this film works well at the box office and brings an end to the bad phase of Tollywood.

Guntur Kaaram Netflix Release Garners Massive Viewership

0

Guntur Kaaram Netflix release is a huge hit. The film sees massive viewership. The movie started streaming on Netflix on 9th February in all languages. In the first weekend, it posts extraordinary viewership on Netflix.

Guntur Kaaram Netflix Views(9th Feb – 11th Feb):

Guntur Kaaram Telugu version trends at the No. 1 position in India. The Hindi version trends at the 4th position, and the Tamil version trends at the 7th position in India. The Telugu version trends globally at the 6th position with 2 million views, while the Hindi version trends at the 10th position globally with 1.1 million views.

Telugu and Hindi versions together see a massive viewership of 3.1 million. Including all other languages, the viewership is expected to be in the range of 4 million. Four million views in 3 days for a regional film, which has negative word of mouth and reviews on social media, is sensational.

Mahesh Babu’s stardom, Trivikram’s brand, and the song ‘Kurchi Madathapetti‘ are the main reasons for the massive viewership. The movie continues to trend at the top on Netflix, with the Hindi version at the 2nd position, Telugu at 3rd, and Tamil at the 5th position trending on Netflix in India.

Thalaiva, Stop Taking Risks!

Rajinikanth, after facing a string of box-office bombs, made a strong comeback with Jailer (2023). Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film emerged as a mammoth commercial success, setting numerous records internationally. As announced, he will be next seen in a project helmed by ace director Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, he chose to do an extended cameo role in a film directed by his daughter, Aishwarya Rajinikanth: Lal Salaam (2024).

The film had low buzz before release due to poor promotions. Following a mixed reception from audiences and critics post-release, it is headed towards a major disaster at the box office. While the original registered significant opening numbers, the Telugu-dubbed version crashed on the first day itself. While the ‘Super Star’ must be lauded for his intention behind starring in his daughter’s directorial, it is evident that he is putting his stardom and buyers at high risk by making such moves. This is far more concerning considering the fact that he has faced constant flops and has just revived his market with Jailer (2023).

It is known that he has agreed to do a guest appearance in Raghava Lawrence’s film, directed by his younger daughter, Soundarya. This has put not just fans but also trade experts in high tension. Why is the legendary actor putting buyers at risk? Wasn’t Kochadaiyaan (2014), a high-budget experimental film directed by Soundarya, a satisfying result?

As fans and well-wishers of Thalaiva, we hope he understands the misery of buyers and stops doing such acts. Instead of playing cameo roles, Rajini can provide creative input during the pre-production phase or take part in promoting the film, which may result in good openings.

Eagle OTT: Makers Face Crisis

0

Ravi Teja’s Eagle was released last week after multiple delays and release date difficulties. The action thriller was made on a heavy budget as the film featured a lot of high-octane action episodes. The movie’s theatrical release did not receive much buzz and it failed to attract audience in huge numbers and is running towards a big failure. It just collected around 11Cr share worldwide till now.

A few months ago, the producers made good deals with OTT deals even if the movie failed theatrically. But now, the situation has changed and the OTT negotiations are creating big challenges for makers. Eagle’s OTT deal has not been locked yet and after this theatrical performance, the makers may face bigger challenges to close the deal.

Satellite business is already down and the OTT deals are the only hope for the makers. If the producers fail to make a good OTT deal then they’re likely to face heavy losses. Directed by Karthik Ghattamaneni, the film also stars Anupama Parameswaran, Kavya Thapar, Navadeep, Madhoo among others. The breakeven mark stands at a modest 23 crore and the film has not even collected 50%

As we all know, ‘Super Star’ Mahesh Babu is joining hands with the legendary S. S. Rajamouli for a world-class action drama film. According to Vijayendra Prasad, the film’s story writer, it will be an African jungle adventure in the vein of the Indian Jones film series.

Labelling it as a ‘big’ film is an understatement. Tentatively titled #SSMB29, it’s the biggest Indian film currently in production in terms of budget, scale, and, of course, box-office potential. According to sources, S. S. Rajamouli, who received global recognition with RRR (2024), is keen to tap international markets with his next project. Having said that, it’s a Telugu-language project made for audiences across the length and breadth of the globe.

The funniest part is that this highly- anticipated project has not even been officially announced yet. The film’s team is planning to do so on the occasion of Ugadi and kickstart the filming process in the summer of this year. Here are the exclusive details of #SSMB29’s technical department:
