Prithviraj Sukumaran

Prithviraj Sukumaran (born October 16, 1982), a highly acclaimed Indian actor, director, producer, and playback singer who predominantly works in Malayalam cinema. With a prolific career spanning over two decades, he has acted in more than 100 films. Consequently, he is widely celebrated for seamlessly balancing incredible commercial stardom with truly powerful, critically acclaimed performances. Today, he firmly stands as one of the defining forces and highest-paid actors in the Malayalam film industry.

Early Beginnings and Breakthrough Roles

Interestingly, Prithviraj officially made his acting debut at just 19 years old in the 2002 film Nandanam. Despite facing a few early box-office failures, he quickly bounced back and rose to prominence. Through the 2000s, he delivered a massive string of memorable films, including hits like Vellithira (2003), Swapnakoodu (2003), and Vellinakshatram (2004).

His true breakthrough came when he starred in Classmates (2006), which became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of the year. Shortly after, he made history by becoming the youngest recipient of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor at age 24 for his powerful performance in Vaasthavam (2006).

Becoming a Superstar and Expanding Horizons

As he grew as an artist, he beautifully shifted between commercial hits and experimental cinema. His phenomenal performances in films like Puthiya Mukham (2009) catapulted him into massive superstardom! Furthermore, this 2009 action film even marked his exciting debut as a playback singer.

Later, he headlined some of Malayalam cinema’s biggest critical and commercial hits. For example, he earned his second Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his deeply emotional work in the medical drama Ayalum Njanum Thammil (2012) and the biographical film Celluloid (2013).

A Record-Breaking Director and Producer

Outside of his incredible acting talent, Prithviraj has proven his true mettle behind the camera. In 2010, he became a producer by joining the production company August Cinema. He proudly co-produced and starred in Indian Rupee (2011), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. Eventually, he launched his own highly successful production banner, Prithviraj Productions, in 2018 alongside his wife, Supriya Menon.

Adding to his massive success, he officially made his directorial debut with the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, starring the legendary Mohanlal. Ultimately, this incredible film became one of Malayalam cinema’s absolute biggest box-office successes! Most recently, he directed the highly anticipated sequel, L2: Empuraan (2025).

Recent Triumphs and The Goat Life

Prithviraj continues to push boundaries and deliver unforgettable performances. His recent hits include Driving Licence (2019), Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020), and the pan-Indian action film Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023).

However, his most recent crowning achievement is his truly transformative portrayal of Najeeb in the 2024 film Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life. For this highly demanding role, he proudly won his third Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor at the 54th Kerala State Film Awards.
