Mohanlal

Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair, known mononymously as Mohanlal. He is an incredibly talented Indian actor, producer, and playback singer. Widely celebrated for his highly versatile and deeply natural acting, he primarily works in Malayalam cinema while also starring in various Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films. Because of his phenomenal talent and impressive filmography, the media and fans affectionately refer to him as “The Complete Actor” and “The Universal Star”.

Early Life and A Unique Debut

Born on May 21, 1960, in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, Mohanlal actually began his career playing an antagonist. Interestingly, he officially made his acting debut in the movie Thiranottam (1978); however, due to censorship issues, the film’s release was massively delayed. Consequently, his first on-screen release became the 1980 romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he delivered a striking performance as the lead villain.

Achieving Superstardom

Following several early antagonistic roles, Mohanlal successfully established himself as a highly bankable lead actor. He beautifully portrayed a wide variety of character types across comedy, action, and drama. Ultimately, he attained true superstar status in Malayalam cinema in 1986 after the massive box office success of Rajavinte Makan, where he played a powerful underworld don.

Beyond Malayalam films, he has delivered unforgettable, critically acclaimed performances in movies like Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar and Ram Gopal Varma’s Company.

A Legacy of Prestigious Honors

Throughout his prolific career spanning over four decades and more than 400 films, Mohanlal has received numerous prestigious accolades. Specifically, he has won five Indian National Film Awards, along with six Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor.

To honor his massive contributions to Indian cinema, the Government of India proudly awarded him the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019. Furthermore, in a truly unique achievement, he became the very first actor in India to receive the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army in 2009. Finally, he also expanded his career into successful production, notably beginning with the 1990 musical hit His Highness Abdullah.
