Sekhar Kammula’s Kuberaa, starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna, was released in theaters last week, and Manchu Vishnu’s Kannappa arrived this weekend. Kannappa and Kuberaa lead a promising weekend.

Both movies also clashed regarding the theatre allocation in the Nizam region, as the Kuberaa distributors made sure that their film had a respectable number of screens even on the second weekend.

Kannappa and Kuberaa are expected to perform well this weekend

With no biggies released in summer, the Telugu states’ theaters ran on deficits, but the situation turned good with these two movies bringing audiences to the theaters.

Manchu Vishnu’s Kannappa and Sekhar Kammula’s Kuberaa lead a promising weekend. Both are expected to have good occupancy in theaters today and tomorrow.

Kannappa also opens well in Telugu states, and a good weekend is expected for the film. Also, Vijay Antony’s Maargan opens with positive WOM, while Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen par and F1 Movie will contribute in big cities.

The film, based on Bhakta Kannappa’s real story, received mixed WOM and an opening. On the opening day, it collected around 13 Cr gross, and the share will be near 6 Cr.

If we look at it as a Manchu Vishnu film, the numbers are certainly good. But for the said budget and stars involved, it’s not a big opening at the box office.

Surprisingly, the makers of Kannappa declare it an industry hit, which shocks everyone. There is already a debate among cinephiles about this poster, and we need to see how the team explains it.

Putting aside that this devotional movie needs a bigger weekend, Day 2 and Day 3 must collect more than the opening day.

North America has always been the strongest market for director Sekhar Kammula. His latest film, Kuberaa, starring Dhanush, Nagarjuna, and Rashmika Mandanna, also does the same. Kuberaa tops Sekhar Kammula’s career in the USA.

Kuberaa Tops Sekhar Kammula’s Career in USA

Undoubtedly, North America is the best-performing territory for the film. From advance bookings to date, the film has trended on an extraordinary note, and now it has become the biggest grosser for Kammula.

Kuberaa tops Sekhar Kammula’s career in the USA by surpassing Fidaa. The film emerged as the 1st 2 million grosser for Nagarjuna and Dhanush.

The film has chances to go near $2.5M in its full run, as it is still trending on a good note. The trade expects a good 2nd weekend from the film despite Kannappa’s release.

0

Kuberaa, the latest social drama directed by Sekhar Kammula, starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna, was released in Tamil and Telugu last week. While the Telugu version is going strong, Kuberaa becomes a loss venture in Tamil Nadu.

The film’s theatrical rights have been bought for 18 Cr, and including P&P charges, the total rights are valued at 20 Cr. The film needed to collect around 40 Cr gross for breakeven.

Kuberaa emerges as a Loss Venture in Tamil Nadu despite having Dhanush as the lead

However, the film has just collected around 18 Cr gross in the 1st week, and the 2nd weekend also does not look promising in Tamil Nadu.

Sekhar Kammula’s Kuberaa becomes a loss venture in Tamil Nadu, and it is likely to close under 25 Cr. With this, the distributor will face a loss of around 40%.

The film trends lower than Vaathi [Sir Movie]; it has collected more than 35 Cr gross in Tamil Nadu. Despite having Dhanush as the lead, the Tamil audiences did not turn up to the theaters for Kuberaa.

On the other hand, in Telugu territories, the film is doing well, heading for 100 Cr gross. The 2nd weekend also looks promising for the Telugu film despite Manchu Vishnu’s Kannappa release effect.

Kannappa Day 1 Collections: A Mixed Bag

0

Manchu Vishnu’s Kannappa releases in theaters today amidst decent buzz, and the film opens with good numbers at the box office. The response from audiences and critics is decent. Kannappa Day 1 collections are a mixed bag.

The devotional film opens with mixed and poor reports for the first half, while the second half receives good reports. As far as the box office performance is concerned, Manchu Vishnu’s Kannappa Day 1 Collections are a mixed bag.

Kannappa registers career best openings for Manchu Vishnu

If we see it as a solo film of Vishnu, then we can say it got a sensational opening. However, if we look at the movie’s budget and star cast, like Prabhas, Mohanlal, and Akshay Kumar, it is a moderate start.

Overall, it definitely performed better than trade expectations. Especially in Telugu states, the film sees very good occupancies. The film does not start well overseas.

Even in other languages, also, it is off to a low start. Overall, the film sees a double-digit gross start, and the early estimates are around 13 Cr gross worldwide.

The film needs to witness a big jump over on day 2 and day 3, and at least a 50 Cr gross weekend is needed.

But the advances for the weekend are average as of now, and the film needs massive walk-ins.

Maa Movie Review: A So-So Horror Film With Occasional Thrills

0

Movie Name: Maa
Rating: 2.5/5
Cast:
Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, Kherin Sharma, Surjyasikha Das, Jitin Gulati, and others
Director: Vishal Furia
Produced By:
Ajay Devgn
Release Date: 27th June 2025

Kajol Devgn arrives with Maa, a horror thriller backed by Ajay Devgn, and directed by Vishal Furia. The film is about a mother, who transforms into the goddess Kali to battle a demon’s curse involving fear, blood, and betrayal.

The film is a part of Shaitaan Universe, and let us see whether the inclusion of it is natural or not in our review.

Story:

Ambika (Kajol) and her husband Shuvankar (Indraneil Sengupta) live quite a distance from Chandrapur, which is where Shuvankar grew up.

To save his daughter from sacrifice, Shuvankar, of royal lineage, keeps her existence secret from his family. Ambika and her daughter encounter dire challenges after Shuvankar visits Chandrapur following his father’s death.

Performances:

Kajol is commendable as Ambika and delivers a convincing performance. Ronit Roy’s performance suffered because of his average impact and limited Bengali accent. Kherin is fine, and Indranil Sengupta performs well despite his brief role. Jitin Gulati is not fully utilized.

Analysis:

Vishal Furia directs Maa. The concept and story hold depth, with the unique setup of Goddess Kali and Raktabija’s war. This core idea and its link with the lead family appears promising on paper.

The first half of the film feels slow to establish the mood. One is not afraid or pulled into the world of Chandrapur.

The creature called ‘Daitya’ should frighten, but it does not look as intimidating as it should have been, because the parts involving the character do nt deliver the right amount of intrigue, after a strong foundation.

The second half picks up a bit, with some parts really shining through. The major twist regarding a crucial character is not surprising at all. The lead-up to the climax, where a mother sets on to fight a demon, is solid, but the episode drags though the final sentiment moment works.

Positives:

  • Intriguing Theme of Goddess Kali and Raktabija
  • Few Jump Scares
  • VFX in Some Scenes

Negatives:

  • Weak Portrayal of the Villain/Demon’s Character
  • Lack of Proper High/Thrilling Moments
  • Repetitive VFX Parts

Maa Movie Review and Verdict:

Maa could have been a fantastic mix of horror and mythology, but it misses the target. Kajol nails her role, and the main plot, along with a few moments in the latter half, hit the mark.
