Rajinikanth Films Underperform in Tamil Nadu

Superstar Rajinikanth is undoubtedly the biggest star of Kollywood, who has a strong market in Tamil, Telugu, and even Hindi as well. However, Rajinikanth’s films, including the latest Coolie, underperform in Tamil Nadu. 

At 75 years of age, Rajini still has a substantial market in all languages. But when we see his recent films, compared to other areas, the movies are not doing well in Tamil Nadu.

Kabali, with poor WOM, managed to set very big numbers in all other areas, but in Tamil Nadu, the numbers were not that huge. During the Petta vs. Viswasam clash, the former outshined Viswasam in all areas.

But Ajith’s Viswasam takes a clear lead in TN. Jailer, which set new records everywhere for Kollywood, failed to beat Ponniyin Selvan 1 and did not cross the 200 Cr mark as well.

Now, Rajinikanth’s Coolie underperforms in Tamil Nadu. Yes, it had a weak/below average WOM, but comparing to other areas’ performance, it should have collected at least 170 Cr in TN.

But reaching 150 Cr itself looks like a tough task for the film. Till now, it collected 132 Cr gross in 11 days in TN. All films of Rajinikanth in recent years are doing 10-15% lower on expectations in the main market of Tamil Cinema.

Coolie 11 Days India Collections

Rajinikanth’s Coolie still performs well at the box office after a moderate second weekend. For 11 days, Coolie’s collections in India stand at 307 Cr. The film has collected 268 Cr gross at the domestic box office in its first week.

After that, the action drama, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, collected around 40 Cr gross in the next 4 days in India.

Considering the WOM and reviews, Coolie does well in other territories in India for 11 days. But in Tamil Nadu it certainly has underperformed a bit, as the trade thinks that it at least could have collected around 155 Cr – 160 Cr till now.

But the action drama can cross the 150 Cr mark in its full run if it does well on the third weekend along with the help of Vinayaka Chavithi Festival.

On one side, the fans of PSPK await the release of OG’s second single and other updates, and on the other hand, some unconfirmed reports about the film’s shooting are doing rounds. But the OG team clears all rumors with its official tweet.

A few days ago, the makers of “They Call Him OG” officially announced that the entire shoot has been completed. But surprisingly, from the past 2 days, a strong buzz spread over the internet that the film still has a pending shoot of 6 days, which includes Pawan Kalyan’s presence.

The award of the World Book of Records builds on Balakrishna’s previous recognition of the Padma Bhushan he got in April 2025, solidifying his status as a lasting icon in Telugu cinema.

Coolie Beats Leo at Hindi Box Office

Despite failing to match the expectations of audiences, Rajinikanth’s Coolie has performed reasonably well at the box office. After a good second weekend, the film has achieved another record. Coolie beats Vijay’s Leo at the Hindi box office. 

Even though there was no multiplex release for Leo due to a 4-week OTT window, the film did very well in Hindi belts and collected around 30 Cr net in India and emerged as the 2nd biggest grosser for Kollywood in Hindi belts after 2.0.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie clashed with War 2, the Bollywood biggie, but it was successful in beating Leo collections at the box office. By its second weekend, the film had collected around 32 Cr net in India and surpassed Kabali (28 Cr) and Leo (30 Cr).

Now, this action drama is the second biggest grosser for Kollywood in North India. Overall, the film has collected around 475 Cr gross worldwide and i is racing towards the 500 Cr mark.

Kingdom Streaming on OTT This Week

Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom was released in theaters at the end of July and opened with average WOM/reviews and settled with a below-average status at the box office. The film will be available for streaming on OTT this week.

The movie’s digital rights have been bagged by Netflix, and the action drama will arrive this week for streaming on the popular OTT platform on 28th/29th August in all languages, which makes its theatrical-OTT window a four-week one.

Coolie Finds Relief in Second Weekend

After falling down in the weekdays during the first week, Rajinikanth’s Coolie finds some relief in the second weekend. The film has collected around 40 Cr gross on its second weekend, taking the total gross to 475 Cr worldwide.

The film needs to capitalize on the holiday of Vinayaka Chaviti Festival this week, and the third weekend needs to target at least half of this weekend to take the film’s recovery value to more than 85%.

Trade will be happy, as Coolie’s second weekend brought some relief for them. The film’s breakeven value stands at 600 Cr, and it achieved 79% recovery by today, and it is likely to end up with Below Average-Average status at the box office with 85% recovery.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, this action drama arrived in theaters on August 14th, clashing with War 2. The ordinary content did not match the audiences’ expectations, but still, the movie has maintained the consistency at low levels.
