Bangarraju sets Telugu Film Industry on Top at India level

Bangarraju was released on 14th January 2022 amidst decent hype. Despite the poor advance bookings in many areas, the film has performed well on its first day according to estimates. Bangarraju has set the Telugu film industry on top at the Indian level.

Bangarraju is the only Indian film that has opened to extraordinary collections for Sankranthi 2022. Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, many biggies like RRR and Radhe Shyam from Telugu and Valimai from Tamil for postponed. This meant that many medium and low-budget films entered the Sankranthi 2022 race.

Three films have been released this Sankranthi from the Telugu film industry, Rowdy Boys has opened to poor collections despite being promoted more than Bangarraju. Mega Hero Kalyaan Dhev’s Super Machi has also opened to disastrous collections.

Coming to the Tamil film industry, 6 films are in theatres currently. None of them have been able to achieve a decent start at the collections box. A similar pattern is visible in Malayalam and other languages as well.

All the movies have been struggling at the box office this Sankranthi, but Bangarraju is off to a fantastic start. The film has collected a share of 7 crores in estimates at the box office and is on track to perform better in the coming days. The film will also have the Sankranthi and weekend advantage.

This Sankranti season has now seen two major launches from film families. After Dil Raju’s nephew Ashish debuted with Rowdy Boys, its the time for Jay Galla’s son Ashok Galla’s ‘Hero’ to hit the screens. Set against a movie backdrop, ‘Hero’ provides Ashok with a lot of scope to dance, fight and try out other crafts. Will Hero be the dream launch that the makers planned for? Did he succeed in impressing the audience? Lets find out.

Story: ‘Hero’ is the story of Arjun, an aspiring actor. He aims to enter the movie industry to become a hero. Subbu (Nidhi Agerwal) is his love interest who is also Arjun’s neighbour along with her father Jagapathy Babu. Arjun’s routine life that consists of friends, family and cinema takes an upside-down turn when he receives a gun in courier. What happens next and how Arjun gets caught in a web of crime, action and more drama is what follows.

Performances: Ashok has been given a perfect launch and great screen time to explore the actor in him. While he dances well and looks fine, his acting flaws are clearly visible and need some touch-up. Director Sriram Aditya has infused enough comedy in the film which somehow brings some life into the proceedings. Nidhi Agerwal is just for support and songs and has no other major function here. The writers did try to do something interesting with Jagapathy Babu’s role but it falls flat on the face. A seasoned actor of Jagapathy Babu’s caliber also fails to elevate the proceedings. The writing lets the movie down in a big way.

Analysis: Sriram Aditya, who is known for making lighthearted comedy entertainers has once again tried to infuse heavy dose of comedy to bring light to the weak plot. While the film has a movie backdrop and plenty of room for experimentation, Sriram Aditya chooses to take the safer route of using Mahesh references and hero and director spoofs. This trope makes the film repetitive and gives a sense of deja vu. The support cast also has weak characterization making Ashok shoulder the entire proceedings. Better writing for other characters and a crispier run time would have made the film a better watch.

Verdict: As the film is set against a movie backdrop Hero has enough reference scenes attributed to Superstar Krishna and Mahesh Babu. While this might interest the Superstar fans for a while, the core plot and weak writing make the proceedings quite dull. The sub-plots also don’t align naturally and many elements look slightly forced. The comedy though may work well for those who love the genre and might make Hero a decent Sankranti watch.

Bangarrju is the only biggie to release this Sankranthi, with RRR and Radhe Shyam backing out due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. So far, this risk seems to have paid off for Bangarraju. The film generated hype around it from the songs and trailers, but the advance bookings for the show were poor. This caused fear among the team of Bangarraju initially.

But now all seems fine as the audience turn out seems to be solid. Despite average reviews, the numbers also increased show by show in the Telugu states. The first opening numbers are excellent in Andhra Pradesh due to no occupancy restrictions. The numbers reported in Nizam are decent even with fewer screens due to Dil Raju booking the best screens for Rowdy Boys.

The film is expected to set an all-time record opening day for Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya in opening states. In Ceeded, around 1.5 crores are estimated. In Andhra Pradesh, a total of 3.25 CR+ is estimated, and in Nizam, a sum of 2CR is expected.

Overall a share of 7CR+ is possible on the opening day in the Telugu states. But not all is sunshine for Bangarraju, the film has opened to disastrous numbers outside the Telugu states. However, the film is expected to do more business tomorrow than the opening day due to Sankranthi. The weekend will be an added advantage for the film.

So far, this is a great sign for the film, and the makers will be hoping to make the majority of their money back by the 18th, as restrictions will be imposed on cinema halls from the 18th. But, going by estimates Bangarraju is on the right track.

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s meeting with AP CM Jaganmohan Reddy has been the centre of the news for the past couple of days. Chiranjeevi met the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister at Secretariat in Amaravati to discuss various issues plaguing the film industries. Post the meeting, the Acharya actor briefed the media that theatre closures and G.O 35 and other ticket prices related issues were discussed during this meeting held over lunch.

However, multiple media outlets gave this meeting a political angle. Many channels and websites suggested that Jaganmohan Reddy has offered a Rajya Sabha ticket to the Megastar.

Chiranjeevi took to social media and trashed these rumours and asked people to not react or give attention to such baseless reports.

He stated that his meet with the AP CM was purely to discuss the issues of Tollywood. ‘An attempt is being made to give this meeting a political colour. My only agenda for this meeting was to discuss theatres and ticket pricing issues in the state. I have absolutely no intention to enter politics and don’t wish to enter any assembly at all,” he Tweeted.

Chiranjeevi had established Praja Rajyam party back in 2008 and his party had won 18 seats in the 2009 AP Assembly Elections. He later merged Praja Rajyam with Congress and even served as the Minister of Culture and Tourism at the Centre. He has been away from politics ever since and has time and again said that he has no intention of going to that field/

Bangarraju: Bangarraju opened to decent to good noon shows and has picked up the momentum for matinee shows. It is on track to report excellent day 1 collections. Bangarraju is the biggest Sankranthi release for 2022 and all hopes are on this film to perform well. Even though the advance bookings have been poor, Bangarraju has opened to decent collections.

Rowdy Boys: Rowdy Boys has reported disastrous noon shows all over AP and TS. Rowdy Boys is the most promoted film this Sankranthi. Despite this, the film has opened to disastrous collections. Rowdy Boys has been promoted by JR.NTR, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, and ace directors of Tollywood. Even DSP and Anupama Parameswaran have not been able to save the film. The movie has also generated poor talk and will be a disaster at the box office if the poor showing continues.

Super Machi: The Kalyaan Dhev starrer has already faced an obstacle. The noon shows of the film have been canceled in major theatres due to a lack of audience response. The theatres are instead running Pushpa-The Rise and Akhanda.

Dil Raju’s nephew Ashish’s Rowdy Boys hit the screens earlier today. Releasing amidst the festive season, the film has managed to create a pretty little buzz for itself. Ashish plays the character of an engineering college student engaging in constant fights. Anupama Parameswaran, on the other hand is a medical student.

Story: The story follows the journey of Akash (Ashish) who is a regular college-goer pursuing engineering. At his college, he frequently gets into gang wars and is at constant loggerheads with his rival batch. Kavya (Anupama Parameswaran) is a studious medico with seriousness in life. She eventually falls in love with Akash. His constant habit of getting into fights comes back to haunt him and his relationship with Kavya. Does the duo emerge out of it? Is Akash a reformed individual? Does Kavya achieve her life ambition? This is what the rest of the movie follows.

Performances: Ashish has been presented with a great launchpad by Dil Raju. There is enough scope for fights and dance which the young hero does convincingly. It is, however, the emotional scenes where his limitations as an actor become quite evident. Anupama is making a comeback to Telugu screens after 2 years. She looks lovely and presents a decent performance. However, weak writing doesn’t allow her to explore the acting side much. Sahidev Vikram has got a meaty role as the antagonist and does a decent job. The rest of the supporting cast is just present to fill the screen and have occasional conversations with Ashish.

Analysis: Harsha Konuganti, who earlier made Husharu tries to provide a fine message through the movie. The attempt however falls flat due to excess emphasis on the commercial elements. Ashish’s heroism and elevations scenes take much of the screentime than the actual message. Rowdy Boys is a decent watch mainly for youngsters and has been marketed primarily for that age group. The predictatble screenplay makes this film a tiring watch and with zero chemistry between the lead pair, this musical action drama fails to impress

Verdict: The movie serves only one purpose and that is acting as an extended showreel for Ashish. His physique, dancing skills, and fights have got more prominence than the actual story and screenplay and that is where the movie lets the average movie lover down. Ashish’s characterization and the sudden change in it is rather bizarre and makes the viewer question the basic intent of the film.
