The release of Nagarjuna’s Bangarraju has been one interesting tale in itself. From being the least favoured release for audience and distributors to becoming the biggest release for this Sankranti, Bangarraju has seen it all. The postponement of RRR and Radhe Shyam made the road quite easy for this fantasy drama. A sequel to 2016 hit Soggade Chinni Nayana, Bangarraju is laced with extra star power and more commercial elements. With so many advantages going its way, let’s see if the film manages to live up to expectations.

Story: Staying true to the first film, Bangarraju starts right where SCN ended. Bangarraju ( Nagarjuna ) follows the earthly activities of Chinna Bangarraju ( Naga Chaitanya) from heaven. Chinna Bangarraju much like his elder version is a playboy of his village and indulges in fooling around with women. All hell breaks loose when the village temple treasure is under attack. How Bangarraju combines with Chinna Bangarraju to save the village and its wealth is what the movie follows.

Performances: Nagarjuna can sleepwalk through such roles and is quite effortless in his portrayal of the titular character. Naga Chaitanya surprisingly is quite impressive in his out and out mass avatar and is one of the strong points of the film. Krithi Shetty doesn’t have much to do and the same applies to Ramya Krishna whose talent is wasted in this predictable story. The combo scenes between the father and son duo are a treat to watch and the fans will definitely enjoy it. Anup Rubens music is fresh and adds decent value to the film.

Analysis: Bangarraju is a predictable plot and offers very little novelty in terms of on-screen proceedings. The film often feels dragged at times and might test your patience. While there are some moments to enjoy in the film, the lack of freshness and outdatedness of the screenplay will continuously bother you. Having said that, despite so many flaws, the movie does have some entertaining scenes and those might just be enough to pull it through the Sankranti season

Plus Points:

  • Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya combo scenes
  • Songs
  • Rural backdrop is well designed

Minus Points:

  • Predictable screenplay
  • Runtime
  • Flat narration and writing

Verdict: Bangarraju might benefit not because of the novelty of the plot but because of the release time. The movie has some elements that might interest the family audience. Apart from that, the novelty content is quite low and might test the patience of an average film lover. The runtime of 2 hours 40 minutes doesn’t help the case either.
