Shyam Singha Roy Review- Strong in parts but offers very little else

0

Movie: Shyam Singha Roy
Rating: 3/5
Cast: Nani, Sai Pallavi, Kriti Shetty, Madonna Sebastian
Director: Rahul Sankrityan
Produced By: Niharika Entertainment
Release Date: 24th December

Nani is back to the Silver Screen 2 years after Nani’s Gang Leader with a reincarnation drama directed by Taxiwaala fame Rahul Sankrityan. He pairs up with Sai Pallavi (after their previous successful outing MCA) and Kriti Shetty (who made a strong debut with Uppena this year). The movie has hit the screens amidst huge expectations; read on to find out whether the team delivered.

Story: The movie kicks off with the story of present-day Nani (Ghanta Vasudev), an aspiring film director who has been offered a directorial chance if he can prove himself by directing a short film first. He runs into Keerti (Kriti Shetty) and decides to cast her as the lead actress in his short film. Once he successfully completes the short film, he goes on to direct his first feature film which gains him Pan India fame. It is at this point that the key element of the story takes off with the introduction of plot twists and Nani’s Shyam Singha Roy character in erstwhile Kharagpur. The latter part of the movie is dominated by the flashback episode of Shyam and Rosie (Sai Pallavi). The director ties it back to the present towards the end of the film

Performances: Nani dons both the roles with ease and confidence. Vasudev is a run of the mill character for Nani, one that is like numerous other roles he did, but Shyam Singha Roy is the role where he shines. He looked the part as a 20th century reformer who sympathizes with the Naxal movement but rather uses pen as his weapon, that is until he needs to bash up the bad guys. Sai Pallavi delivers another memorable performance as Rosie, a vulnerable Devadasi who was sold into the system by her parents and meets the outside world for the first time. Kriti Shetty had very little to do along with a host of other character artists who all did justice to their limited screen time. Apart from the lead actors, it is Madonna Sebastian and Rahul Ravindran who deliver stand out performances as Vasu’s lawyer and Shyam’s brother respectively.

Analysis: Shyam Singha Roy starts off slow and takes its time to reach the first conflict point in the plot. Nani and Kriti do their best to keep us engaged throughout the first half, but it is not until the pre-interval episode that the movie really finds its groove. The real strength of the movie lies in the flashback episode, particularly the scenes between Nani and Sai Pallavi which are emotional and engaging. The music and background score by Mickey J Meyer is an asset to the movie, especially the legendary Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry’s last song ‘Sirivennela’ stealing the show. The art department did an excellent job in bringing 1960s West Bengal to life. One of the biggest assets of the movie are the dialogues penned by Janga Satyadev.

Plus Points:

  • Nani and Sai Pallavi
  • Flashback episode and Mickey’s music
  • Courtroom scenes

Minus Points:

  • Story takes a while to come to life
  • Few rushed episodes in 2nd half
  • Unconvincing scenes

Verdict: Shyam Singha Roy is a decent entertainer with commercial elements that are expected from a Tollywood reincarnation drama. The movie expects audience to be invested in the lives of Vasu and Keerti for almost an hour and rewards them from then onwards till the end. The flashback has its highs and lows as the wonderful love story is negated by few rushed scenes to establish Shyam as a famous reformer. The performances, the visuals, and the music make sure that the audience is not disconnected from the proceedings at any point in the latter half. The ending could have been better as the movie ends on an extremely predictable note after an excellent courtroom scene. Overall, Nani makes a good comeback to the big screen with a decent movie but whether it delivers at the box office is left to be seen.

Sekhar Kammula’s films are known to create magic on the small screen and Love Story was no different. This Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi starrer has been one of the biggest success tales of the year. The film was well appreciated by the critics on its release and the audience also gave it a thumbs up.

Sekhar Kammula’s previous superhit Fidaa had also made a similar stunning debut on Television. The Sai Pallavi and Varun Tej starter recorded an amazing rating of 21.1 and stood as the benchmark for medium-budget films.

Shyam Singha Roy: Nani’s bad phase continues

0

Natural Star Nani’s Shyam Singha Roy is all set to release tomorrow. The anticipation towards the movie is quite high and fans are eager to catch him on big screen again. Despite such positive buzz going around, looks like Nani’s low phase is going to continue. Shyam Singha Roy is going for theatrical release unlike his last films ‘V’ and Tuck Jagadish. However, the theatres’ distribution and AP ticket rates are turning out to be a major roadblock here.

The Nizam region for example is going to see the lowest theatre count for a Nani film in recent years. This reincarnation-themed action drama has been allotted 64 centers in Cities. The district centers have got 87 taking the total to 151 in Nizam. The RTC X Roads and Kukatpally will also have a single theatre each making things even gloomier.

Coming to Andhra Pradesh, a number of theatres have been shut down already and a number of C and D centers will be closed from tomorrow. Even Andhra Distributors are not ready to pay the full payments as they are not getting any advances from theatre owners because of the ticket prices G.O.

All in all, the bad phase for Nani is not leaving him and it would take an intervention from Government and superb word of mouth for the movie to deliver success

Dhanush- Venky Atluri movie title revealed

0

The title of Dhanush’s upcoming bilingual film has been revealed. Venky Atluri will be directing the film which has been titled ‘Sir’.

Dhanush- Venky combination has got everyone quite intrigued due to the actors’ and the directors’ contrasting styles of films.

While Dhanush’s films are rooted in reality and show the mirror to society, Venky Atluri’s films are light-hearted romantic comedies. This has made the Dhanush -Venky even more interesting. However, right now the buzz is that this project will be totally different from all the previous Venky Atluri films.

Venky’s previous films Tholiprema, Mr. Majnu, and RangDe were romantic comedies with a light-hearted approach towards life. The upcoming Dhanus-Venky film will be more in Dhanush style. Reportedly, the national award-winning actor will be portraying the role of a social crusader taking on the education system. This will be a serious subject and it needs to be seen how the young director handles it.

Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya will produce the film while G.V. Prakash Kumar will compose the film for this project.

100 theaters closed in AP

0

The ticket prices issue has taken a tragic turn with over 100 theatres shutting down their doors voluntarily. These theatres are spread across Uttarandhra, Godavari, and Krishna districts.

The whole issue started when the government started conducting raids last week. The government has been shutting down theatres citing the violation of government orders.

Surprise inspections are being conducted across the state. Three theatres were shut down in Vizianagaram on Tuesday while Krishna district Joint Collector seized 15 theaters in the district yesterday.

The ticket prices that have been brought under implementation have made it really impractical for exhibitors to operate with. The rents, maintenance, and taxes will leave basically nothing for the theatre owners and if the same continues, it will be a massive loss to the industry.

Now, the theatre owners are voluntarily shutting down and are demanding the government’s immediate attention to the issue. The exhibitors are demanding a new government order which would provide relief from the current rates.

AP Government ticket prices: Does it plan to shut down theatres forever?

0

The recent developments in Andhra Pradesh regarding ticket prices have turned out to be a nightmare for the film industry. On one hand, the Covid has already turned out to be a massive problem for the industry while the G.Os are emerging to be a bigger threat to the survival of Tollywood.

With a number of Tollywood biggies set to release in the coming days, producers are spending sleepless nights. The distributors and exhibitors are now under a new fear of theatre closures. Surprise inspections are being conducted across the state. Three theatres were shut down in Vizianagaram yesterday while Krishna district Joint Collector seized 15 theaters in the district today.

Despite so many hurdles, the industry biggies are not voicing out their dissent out of fear of backlash from the government. The industry insiders appear to be okay with the government tracking the collections and paying the taxes. The government has still not come up with a concrete plan and a portal for online ticket booking yet and that suspense is also turning out to be a big headache for many.

The ticket prices that have been brought under implementation have made it really impractical for exhibitors to operate with. The rents, maintenance, and taxes will leave basically nothing for the theatre owners and if the same continues, it will be a massive loss to the industry.

The makers of RRR and Radheshyam makers are the worst affected as a lot is riding on these movies. The sudden raids on theatres have made the situation even worse.

If this situation continues, the trade circles and the industry will surely collapse and the theatres will have to see a permanent shutdown. What’s really worrying is that lives of so many are being put on line to cater to the ego of one individual

Allu Arjun’s Pushpa – pan India fake collections?

0

Icon Star Allu Arjun’s Pushpa that released last week had a great start at the box office. The film is especially doing great in other territories and had a solid start at the overseas market also. The film opened to mixed talk and average reviews. This, however, didn’t stop the movie from putting massive figures through the first weekend.

Post the weekend, however, the story has been totally different. For example, today, the noon shows started on a disastrous note in the Telugu States. Heading towards a heavy loss venture in Andhra Pradesh. While Allu Arjun’s Pushpa is going steady in many areas, the makers are reporting exaggerated figures much to the surprise of many. Especially in the case of Hindi, this action entertainer is performing much better than expected.

Despite this, the Hindi figures are being reported 30% more than actual collections. The same is the case with Malayalam and Tamil also. As per the trade circles, the actual numbers are being hiked for these versions as well.

In Telugu as well, the distributors are made to fudge the collections and report. Reportedly, they are including the GST returns and calculating different rents and terms in order to further bloat the collections.

Many industry insiders, and trade analysts have already expressed astonishment at these numbers.

Many of us already know the way Allu Arjun’s PR and digital team works. The team has played a pivotal role in managing trade people and declared Pushpa as a massive blockbuster with record revenue
