Direct OTT release for Maniratnam’s prestigious project

Maniratnam’s much anticipated period drama Ponniyin Selvan has been in making for quite some time. The film is being made on a massive budget and will feature an impressive starcast. According to buzz, the movie might go for an OTT release. The movie has been in making for quite some time.

The rising budgets and the Omicron scare are being cited as the reasons for this reported switch to OTT. An official announcement on the same might come out in January 2022.

Ponniyin Selvan is a historic novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. This project is now on set at the moment and has faced many hurdles. Multiple schedules of its shooting but halted due to COVID-19. Mani Ratnam is planning to release the film in 2 parts.

This project features a star cast with Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rai, Tisha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and many other popular actors in supporting roles. A.R.Rahman is setting tunes and bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Naveen Polishetty’s Next Movie First Look Is Out Now

Naveen Polishetty’s first look from his next movie is out now. The young sensation is on fire at the moment, his previous two films have both been super hits.

The 2019 released Agent Sai Srinivas Athreya and 2021 released Jathi Ratnalu impressed both the Telugu audiences as well as the critics. Agent Sai Srinivas Athreya was a quirky comedic thriller that kept you hooked till the end. Jathi Ratnalu was an out-and-out laugh riot in theatres.

The film is going to be an out-of-the-box quirky entertainer just like Jathi Ratnalu. Kalyan Shankar, the director of the film has previously worked in the direction department of Jathi Ratnalu.

When Kalyan Shankar narrated the script to Naveen, he said that he immediately loved it and was on board. The first look shows Naveen as a classy South Indian groom sitting on a royal red chair.

Sithara Entertainments are bankrolling the project. They have also produced the Pawan Kalyan starrer Bheemla Nayak.

The cast and crew of the film will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Apart from this film, he also has a film with Anushka Shetty. UV Creations are the producers of the film and Mahesh Babu P is the director.

YCP MP reveals AP government’s issue with Tollywood

Tollywood vs AP Government is a battle that’s taking one sharp turn after another. Speaking on the issue, YCP MP Margani Bharat Ram stated the reason behind the government’s stance on this issue.

The government one hand is passing G.Os and using its machinery to target the theatres and the industry as a whole. Retaliating o this, Tollywood is approaching courts and even shutting down its theatres voluntarily in protest.

The YCP MP took to social media and said that Tollywood mainly functions out of Hyderabad and not in AP while almost 70% of revenue is generated from AP.

Over the last few days, the AP government has been conducting raids over theaters in the state and seizing them. The government claims that these theatres haven’t been adhering to the tickets rates established by them. 100s of theatres in protest of this move have started shutting down across the state.

The ticket price issue has been ongoing for quite some time. Despite multiple meetings between the two parties, a common ground hasn’t been established yet. Now with YCP MP Margani Bharat Ram’s statement, the intent of the government is clear.

Atrangi Re review – A feel good drama with it’s share of clichés and inconsistencies

Story: Vishu (Dhanush) and Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) are forcibly married off when they are in a mentally unstable state. After their wedding, they reveal to each other that they already have lovers. So they decide to get divorce and go off to their respective lovers. Just then, unexpected events await both.

Performances: Dhanush is at his charming best and delivered a heartwarming performance with excellence in emotional scenes. Sara Ali Khan is a surprise package. She has stood tall alongside Dhanush and delivered exactly what is expected out of her character. Akshay Kumar appears in a small yet important role and does a neat job. His character needed better writing considering how much importance it had. Apart from these three, Ashish Verma did well as Dhanush’s friend.

Analysis: One of the most important positive factor for this film is undoubtedly AR Rahman’s music. The soothing songs and the magical background score saved the film to a huge extent. The visuals too complimented well. Himanshu Sharma’s story is nothing new. It’s a usual triangular romantic drama with a twist. The predictability starts setting in very early in the film but the damage was controlled really well in the first half through the fun factor and breezy moments. However, in the second half, the film lost it’s momentum. The portions between Akshay Kumar and Sara Ali Khan are too hard to believe after a point and they felt stretched beyond limit. How did Dhanush fall so deeply in love with Sara? and how bad a past has Sara lived through? These two aspects needed more detailed writing to understand better about what the characters are going through but that was missing. There are some excellent individual scenes in the film which includes the feel-good climax but had the second half been handled better and had the Akshay-Sara track been written stronger, this film would have been something very memorable.

Verdict: Despite some unconvincing moments and weak writing in the second half, Atrangi Re is watchable enough for it’s good performances, excellent music and a breezy first half. It will appeal more to those who can overlook certain cinematic liberties and connect with the characters and emotions.

Chiranjeevi’s Acharya now looking to prepone to a January release?

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Acharya has already undergone a number of delays and release date changes. Now it appears that the film might once again change its decided release date. According to the buzz, the makers are planning to prepone the release of the film to January 26th. The movie is slated to release on 4th February.

The movie unit is contemplating this movie to protect itself from a possible spike of Omicron projected in February. A discussion on this issue will be held with the distributors in the coming days.

Coming to pre-release business, Acharya is doing a solid job across territories. Acharya has now achieved the distinction of being the first non- pan India film to do Rs 100 Cr pre-release business in Telugu states.

The movie has been shot on a rand scale across multiple long schedules. Massive sets were erected in Marredumilli, Yellanadu, and Singareni Coal mines to give the movie a grand look.

AP exhibitors triumph over the government?

It looks like the demands of the AP exhibitors might be met soon. The voluntary shutting down of the theatres in the state and demands to bring in a new G.O with more reasonable ticket prices might actually become a reality.

According to reports, the government is showing interest in resolving the issue after heavy pressure was created on them. Firstly, it would look to address the ticket rates of the lowest categories. This will be done to ensure the theaters can run self sufficiently.

Post this, there are reports of the government calling the Tollywood delegation to discuss various issues. These include the ticket prices and other issues such as extra show permissions.

With a number of Tollywood biggies set to release in the coming days, producers are spending sleepless nights. The distributors and exhibitors are now under a new fear of theatre closures. Surprise inspections are being conducted across the state. Three theatres were shut down in Vizianagaram last week while Krishna district Joint Collector seized 15 theaters in the district for trivial reasons.

Till now over 100 theatres have been shut down across the state. Many more will be shut down from tomorrow. This protest by AP exhibitors seems to have worked and now due to mass closures of theatres, the government is seeking a mid ground and could possibly bring a new G.O.
