Hombale Films Compensates Salaar Losses

Prashanth Neel’s Salaar marked the comeback of Prabhas after three consecutive disasters; releasing in December 2023, this epic action drama grossed over INR 600 crore worldwide. While the film was a profitable venture in Nizam & USA, there are some territories that incurred significant losses and Andhra Pradesh is one of them.

Yes, the film underperformed in the biggest territory of ‘Rebel Star’ Prabhas; there are two major reasons behind this paradox. Number one, Salaar’s theatrical rights have been sold at exorbitant prices considering the Prabhas-Neel combo; number two, the government of Andhra Pradesh has not allowed for a hike in ticket prices or mid-night shows. The latter is the precise reason why Nizam (where ticket price hikes and mid-night shows were allowed) achieved breakeven and Andhra didn’t.

The situation in Andhra is so bad that even S. S. Rajamouli’s RRR (2022) accumulated some losses for buyers despite the excellent reception it got. According to trade experts, for event films like Salaar, two-thirds of the investment must be minted in the first weekend itself to achieve breakeven, and unfortunately, that is not happening in Andhra territories, thus paving the way for losses.

Shekhar Kammula’s Kubera Plot Leaked: Dhanush Plays A Beggar

Shekhar Kammula, a prolific director of Telugu cinema, is working with Tamil star Dhanush for the first time. Titled ‘Kubera’, it also stars Akkineni Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarabh. With music composed by ‘Rockstar’ Devi Sri Prasad, this is touted to be a ‘Pan-Indian’ venture with a simultaneous release across languages.

The film’s first look was unveiled last week, which sparked numerous speculations on the internet. According to a reliable source, Kubera is set in the slum of Dharavi, Mumbai; it narrates the journey of a beggar (Dhanush) who goes on to become a powerful mafia don. Rashimka is reportedly playing Dhanush’s love interest, while Nagarjuna’s role remains a secret.

The source also adds that Shekhar Kammula has envisoned the role specifically for Dhanush, and the latter is mightily impressed with it; Kubera will offer something we’ve never seen before with Dhanush’s performance stealing the show. The makers have already wrapped up the first schedule in Tirupathi, and a teaser of the film is planned to be released very soon.

It’s currently enjoying a dream run at the box office, with Premalu and Manjummel Boys performing exceptionally well. Despite this, the filmmakers of Malayalam seem to be unhappy with a trend in the entertainment industry: movie reviews.

According to them, critic reviews, which come out within hours of screening the first show, are killing the footfalls of films; the filmmakers of Malayalam have even approached a local court regarding this issue. As per sources, they demand a minimum gap of two days from the release for critics to publish reviews on the web, so it allows the audience to form their own opinions and not blindly follow a website or YouTube channel.

Even people in the Telugu film fraternity have openly requested that the media wait for one day before publishing reviews. It must be seen how the court reacts to this case, which is killing not just Malayalam films but films across languages.
