Venkatesh’s much-awaited Drushyam 2 was released earlier today on Amazon prime Video. While fans and movie lovers expressed dismay at the OTT release, the excitement of the edge-of-the-seat sequel has overpowered that fact. The original Malayalam version was earlier released on Amazon Prime Video and gave movie lovers enough to cheer about. Has Venkatesh succeeded in creating the magic of the original? Let’s find out

Story: The story picks up six years after the life-changing incident that changed Rambabu’s (Venkatesh’s) family. Just when everything was falling back to normalcy, Rambabu and his family find themselves face to face with the shadows of the past. How Rambabu manages to outwit the police and how he faces trickier and larger problems this time around forms the plot

Performance: Venkatesh as always is dependable and fits the role to perfection. While his lifestyle and wealth has gone up in the six years, he maintains the same shrewdness and brilliance intact beautifully. Rambabu is one of the most convincing role that he has played in his career and Drushyam 2 is his movie from beginning to the end. Meena, Esther Anil and Kruthika reprise their roles from the original and do a decent job. Nadhiya as the ex IG Geetha Prabhakar showcases great versatility and conviction in the performance while Sampath Raj plays the tough and unforgiving cop to great effect. Casting is one of the biggest strengths of the movie and Jeethu Joseph excels in this part. The director must also be commended for not straying away much from the Mohanlal version in his quest for adopting nativity. Background music by Anup Rubens is another highlight of the movie ane one would be left with a desire of watching this film in theatres during many scenes.

Analysis: One of the biggest strengths of Drushyam 2 is how it engages and surprises the viewers. There are easter eggs lying throughout the film and these dots when joined towards the end would leave you pleasantly surprised. The screenplay is a faithful adaptation of the original and not even for once would you find it lagging. With a runtime of a little over 2 and a half hour, Drushyam 2 keeps the viewers hooked especially once the second half picks up. The film on the technical end is quite strong with well-researched writing and editing being great assets to the film.

Verdict: Drushyam 2 is definitely one of the best-made remakes in Telugu and the credit must go to Jeethu Joseph for this style of handling two languages. The film is the best example of superior writing elevating the whole film. It is definitely a movie you must have in your watchlist for the weekend and you’ll be pleasantly surprised even if you have watched the original.
