In every generation of Tamil cinema, two to three forefront actors have always enjoyed a hardcore fanbase. During the formative years of the Tamil Film Industry, MGR, Gemini Ganesan and Sivaji Ganesan ruled Tamil cinema. They always enjoyed a strong fanbase and would always spark healthy competition amongst each other.
This was then followed by the likes of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth who were the faces of Tamil Cinema from the 80s period. There would always be a debate as to who is the bigger star or who had the bigger fanbase and so on. While Kamal Haasan was known for his classy movies, Rajini was more on the mass commercial side of cinema.
In the current space of Tamil cinema, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith are the biggest stars. Whenever their film releases, it is like a festival for their fans, and their movies are celebrated in a grand manner. The two have a hardcore fanbase that never lets them down.
It looks like this Pongal 2023, Vijay and Ajith will be battling it out in theatres. Vijay’s Varisu with Vamsi Paidipally and Ajith’s Thunivu with H. Vinoth are both looking at a Pongal release. We are hoping that the completion between the fans is healthy and that in the end, cinema stands victorious.
