This Ramayana review looks at Ramayana, the much-awaited epic that is now out in theatres. Said to be mounted on a massive budget, the film has built good craze through its promos, posters and promotional interviews. After the trailer impressed with Yash’s Ravana, here is how the final film turned out.
Ramayana Story
The film starts with the rise of Ravana, the powerful ten-headed Rakshasa who worships Lord Brahma, gains immortality and becomes the emperor of Lanka, driven by a desire for vengeance.
As Ravana becomes too powerful to suppress, Lord Vishnu’s avatar Rama, the Prince of Ayodhya and an ideal prince (Maryada Purushottam), is born to end his atrocities. The rest of the story follows Rama, his wife Sita and his loyal brother Lakshmana, who cross paths with Ravana during the 14-year exile ordered by King Dasharatha.
Performances
Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi play Lord Rama and Sita. They bring tenderness and a calm feel to the characters and deliver convincing performances. Yash, who plays Ravana, fits the role perfectly with a towering screen presence and intense acting in a few crucial scenes. His face-off with Rama is reportedly set for Part 2, as Yash himself said earlier.
The rest of the cast, including Ravi Dubey, Lara Dutta, Shobhana and Rakul Preet Singh, make their presence felt, with Rakul emerging as the standout performer.
Ramayana Movie Analysis
Nitesh Tiwari opens Ramayana with the backstory of the epic. After a well-introduced world of the Rakshasas, the entry of Ravana and the establishment of his kingdom work solidly. The introduction of Lord Rama also works decently.
There are some ordinary moments, but the first half picks up in the final 30-40 minutes with the Rama-Sita portions leading into the Vanavasam episode, which sets up a good interval block. The pre-interval confrontation between Kaikeyi and Rama is one of the best-written emotional sequences.
The second half has several engaging sequences, such as the Ravana-Vidyutjihva portions, the Rama-Bharata sequence and the Soorpanaka-Rama sequence. The Ravana vs Jatayu clash towards the climax takes the impact to the next level with stunning visuals.
Positives
- Visuals and world building
- Performances of Ranbir, Sai Pallavi and Yash
- Second half
- Climax Jatayu sequence
Negatives
- Ordinary feel in the first half for a while
- Stretched feel here and there
- Music not up to the mark
Ramayana Review and Verdict
Ramayana is a worth-watching film. The lead actors deliver strong performances and the visuals are impressive. The introduction of Ravana, the interval scene featuring the confrontation between Kaikeyi and Rama, and the climax with Ravana and Jatayu are effective.
Some parts are prolonged because of the runtime, and the lackluster music diminishes the overall impact. It could have been presented in a more engaging way.
Still, this is one of the better adaptations and presentations of the Ramayana in recent years.
