Aamir Khan
About
Aamir Hussain Khan (born March 14, 1965) is a highly influential Indian actor, director, producer, and television talk-show host, renowned for his dedication to his craft, which has earned him the media moniker “Mr. Perfectionist”. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Khan has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in Hindi cinema.
Early Beginnings and Breakthrough
Born in Bombay (now Mumbai) into a family with deep roots in the film industry, Khan was introduced to cinema early in life. He first appeared on screen as a child actor in his uncle Nasir Hussain’s film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). His professional acting career commenced over a decade later with the experimental film Holi (1984).
However, his major breakthrough and first commercial success arrived with the romantic tragedy Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). His performance in this film, alongside his role in the thriller Raakh (1989), earned him a National Film Award (Special Jury Award/Special Mention).
Rise to Stardom and Continued Success
Throughout the 1990s, Khan solidified his position as a leading actor with several commercially successful films, including Dil (1990), Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). A significant milestone was the romantic drama Raja Hindustani (1996), which became the biggest hit of the year and earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor after seven previous nominations.
In 1999, Khan expanded his repertoire by establishing his own production company, Aamir Khan Productions. The company’s inaugural film, Lagaan (2001), was a massive critical and commercial success. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, making it one of the few Indian films to achieve this honor. Lagaan also brought Khan a National Film Award for Best Popular Film and two additional Filmfare Awards (Best Actor and Best Film).
Directorial Debut and Box Office Dominance
Following a four-year hiatus, Khan returned with strong performances in films like Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006). In 2007, he made his highly acclaimed directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par, a deeply moving film about a dyslexic child where he also played a supportive art teacher. This project earned him the Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director.
In the subsequent years, Khan became synonymous with box-office records. His films Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014), and Dangal (2016) all held records for being the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. His portrayal of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in Dangal won him his third Filmfare Best Actor award.
Recent Projects: Sitaare Zameen Par (2025)
In June 2025, Khan released the sports comedy-drama Sitaare Zameen Par, which he produced and starred in alongside Genelia Deshmukh. Directed by R. S. Prasanna, the film serves as a spiritual successor to his 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par and is an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film Champions. In the film, Khan plays Gulshan Arora, a basketball coach who is sentenced to community service, requiring him to train a team of intellectually challenged players.
Sitaare Zameen Par was noted for its heartwarming themes and was released exclusively in cinemas before premiering directly on YouTube.
