Sikandar Movie Review: A Big Disappointment

Salman’s new action film, Sikandar, has hit theaters today in celebration of EID. Directed by AR Murugadoss, renowned for his work in Tamil and Hindi cinema with films like Ghajini, Thuppakki, and Kaththi, the movie features Rashmika Mandanna, Kajal Aggarwal, and Sathyaraj in significant roles. The film’s promotional content didn’t impress audiences, and let’s check whether the movie reverses the opinion in our review.

Story:

A stubborn cop named Prakash seeks out King Sanjay Rajkot, who belongs to a royal family, as the latter beats the son of a crooked politician, Pradhan. After an unexpected loss, Sanjay visits Mumbai to connect with three organ recipients and meets Pradhan and his privileged son, Arjun again. How does Pradhan try to trouble Sanjay, and what is Sanjay’s response forms the story.

Performances:

Salman Khan looks impassive, not showcasing any muscle tone or agility, and reciting dialogues without emotion. Rashmika Mandanna’s important role cannot impress and ends up being comical. Sathyaraj’s performance fell short in a routine antagonist role, focused on threats and yelling.

Kajal Aggarwal is fine, while Kishore felt lackluster. Sharman Joshi plays a loyal sidekick to the Hero. Prateik Babbar plays a role like Darbar, an unremarkable part of a privileged brat.

Analysis:

Murugadoss sought to blend action and emotion in Sikandar. The storyline feels fine, and an interesting screenplay and well-crafted characters would elevate it. But Sikandar fails to utilize its strength. The initial scenes are not great but effective for a while. The emotional moments with Salman and Rashmika fail to resonate because of their ordinary treatment. Once the tragedy strikes, a small impact follows, leading to expectations for the latter part to enhance it.

But, in the second half, Sikandar loses the rhythm entirely. The Hero-Villain conflict lacks strength. The Hero takes charge effortlessly and resolves all matters in a timely manner. The antagonist, portrayed as a corrupt politician, fits the usual stereotype of someone who yells all the time but doesn’t act. The Hero’s sentimental scenes with three important characters seem unconvincing and ineffective. The climax scenes that aim to glorify the hero feel underwhelming.

“I have learnt that some of the political themes that have emerged in the movie L2: Empuraan, the second part of the Lucifer franchise, have caused a lot of disappointment to many of my fans. As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my movies harbours hatred towards any political movement, idea or religion,” Mohanlal wrote in his post.

Therefore, I and the Empuraan team sincerely regret the mental pain caused to my loved ones, and with the realisation that the responsibility lies with all of us who worked behind the film, we have decided together to compulsorily remove such parts from the movie,” he added.

Mohanlal expressed his continued loyalty to his fans. “I have lived my cinematic life as one of you for the last four decades. Your love and faith are my only strength. I believe Mohanlal is not greater than that,” the 64-year-old actor wrote.

L2: Empuraan creates history in just 3 days

L2: Empuraan starring Mohanlal released amid great hype and expectations. The film, however, received mixed reviews and response from the audiences. This didn’t impact the prospects of the film in Malayalam version and the film put great numbers at the box office. But its performance is not good in other languages.

On the Day 1, the film collected nearly 67 crores worldwide. On Day 2, it has collected 35 crores. In India, the Day 3 collections are higher than the opening day and in the overseas market, it has been trending well. The total 3 days worldwide gross is expected to be in the range of 135 crores.

In 3 days, the film has become the highest-grosser of Mollywood in the overseas market. It is also set to rake in $10M in the overseas market becoming the first Malayalam film to do so. Interestingly, the film has surpassed the final collections of its prequel, Luficer.

MAD Square opened with unanimous positive response on its release day. The film also registered big number theatrically grossing 18.5 crores. The film also held super strong on Day 2 and the early estimates are around 12 crores gross. With this, MAD Square collected 30 crores gross in 2 days. For breakeven, the film has to collect 50 crores gross and this is expected to happen by Monday.

Day 3 and Day 4 have the advantages of Ugadi and Ramzan festivals which will be the biggest days for the film at the box office. Telugu Audiences preference has also become MAD Square for the weekend undoubtedly. Achieving the 100 crore mark by the film depends on how well the film holds after the Monday.

MAD Square has competition with other films like L2: Empuraan, Robinhood and Veera Dheera Sooran. But, these films haven’t received good reviews in the Telugu Version. There are also no notable releases in the coming weeks and the film may have a long run till the Summer season.

Veera Dheera Sooran starring Vikram was all geared up for release on 27th March worldwide but faced financial hurdles before the release. The film, as a result, had its morning and matinee shows cancelled. The release happened only with the evening shows, but still, it received unanimous positive reviews. However, the collections are not as expected.

On Day 1, Veera Dheera Sooran opened with only 2.5 crores and Day 2 collected in the range of 4 crores. The Day 3 estimates are in the range of 6-7 crores. So far, for 3 days, the gross of Tamil Nadu is in the range of 13 crores. Interestingly, Vikram’s last venture, Thangalaan opened with around 13 crores gross in Tamil Nadu. Veera Dheera Sooran had to struggle for 2-3 days to match this number.

In the Telugu version, the film has been a washout and not added good numbers in any territory. The film faced issues with the non-theatrical rights and the business was not closed yet. Theatrically, the film has to collect more than 100 crores for a decent success. But, as per the estimates, the film must take a big jump. The next 2 days are holidays with Sunday and Ramzan. The film must put great numbers on these 2 days.

Robinhood, the latest action entertainer starring Nithin and Sreeleela, directed by Venky Kudumula, is facing a big struggle at the box office. After having a poor start on the first day, Robinhood Day 2’s box office numbers crashed below Day 1.

On the opening day, the film just collected in the range of 4 Cr gross. It was a disastrous start for the film. Due to below-par WOM and reviews, on Day 2 it further dropped from that. The early estimates of day 2 gross indicate just around 3 Cr, which takes the total gross to 7 Cr, with a share just around 3 Cr.

If the film does not pick up momentum on festival days on Day 3 and Day 4, it will end up with a single-digit closing share. Robinhood Day 2’s box office numbers crashed below Day 1.

Even though it came with a blockbuster Bheeshma combo, somehow the promotional content of the film completely failed to grab audiences’ attention. Also, it opens with below-par ratings/reviews.

Because of such a bad response, Robinhood completely went down at the box office. Nithin, who expected a comeback with this, but the film is heading towards one of the biggest disasters for him.
