The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case: A Well-Made Investigation Thriller

0

Web Series Name: The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case
Rating: 3.25/5
Cast: Amit Sial, Sahil Vaid, Bhagavathi Perumal, Girish Sharma, Danish Iqbal, Vidyut Garg and others
Director: Nages Kukunoor
Streaming on: Sony Liv

Director Nagesh Kukunoor’s investigative-drama ‘The Hunt’, featuring Amit Sial, is streaming on Sony Liv and it produced good hype due to its stoyrline. Let us see how far the film lives up to the expectaitons.

Story:

On May 21, 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This shocking event left the nation in disbelief, and the search for the assassins turned into one of the most followed investigations in Indian history.

The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, currently available on Sony LIV, explores this investigation in a seven-episode series.

Analysis:

Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, it is inspired by journalist Anirudhya Mitra’s book Ninety Days. The story starts at the explosion site, where investigators find a Chinon camera among the debris. The film inside becomes the first major clue, triggering the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Dr. Karthikeyan.

The series highlights the back-and-forth of the case, alternating between the investigators and the assassins as both sides head towards an unavoidable confrontation.

Amit Sial portrays Karthikeyan, the leader of the SIT, maintaining steady control. His team consists of Sahil Vaid as Amit Verma, Bagavathi Perumal as Ragothaman, Danish Iqbal as Amod Kanth, Girish Sharma as Radhavinod Raju, and Vidyuth Garg as Captain Ravindran.

The show depicts their thorough process of tracking suspects, assembling scattered clues, and facing internal obstacles. The officers communicate in calm, practical tones, and their discussions reflect the everyday frustrations of the investigation—missed leads, political interference, and ongoing pressure to achieve results.

The other side of the story centers on Sivarasan, the LTTE operative responsible for the assassination. Portrayed by Shafeeq Mustafa, Sivarasan appears focused and organized, concealing his involvement in the plot beneath a calm exterior.

This web series depicts him and his team—including Nalini, Subha, and the suicide bomber Dhanu—as they blend into their surroundings, traveling through Tamil Nadu and Karnataka while speaking Tamil with Lankan accents. The Hunt follows an honest approach in showing the proceedings.

Rather than taking a dramatic approach, the narration emphasizes the importance of minor details in such a significant case.

It effectively portrays the discussions and decisions of the special team, the pressures they encounter from higher officials, and the miscommunication with local police.

Particularly notable is the final episode, where the SIT team and NSG Commandos prepare to confront the criminals but are halted by higher officials citing trivial reasons, which heightens the intrigue and frustration from the story’s perspective.

Nevertheless, Nagesh Kukunoor and his team could have explored the political aspects of the incident more deeply, and the failures of intelligence or systems are not adequately addressed.

Also, because the story point revolves around one incident, a few parts become dull because of the unevenness around the situations.

The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case Review and Verdict:

The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case is a well-made investigation drama that works with superb performances and honest storytelling. It fails to capitalize on a few important points but ends on a strong note.

Released on June 20th, Kuberaa became one of the rare films that received unanimous positive reviews and WOM but did not reach its full potential overall.

Thammudu Is a Bigger Disaster Than Robinhood and Extra Ordinary Man

0

Nithin, who is facing a tough phase of his career with continuous failures, came up with Thammudu, an action drama directed by Sriram Venu. Thammudu becomes a bigger disaster than Robinhood and Extraordinary Man.

The actor’s last releases, Extra Ordinary Man, Robinhood, and Thammudu, could not even get decent openings despite being made on huge budgets.

Thammudu: An Utter Failure at the Box Office

Shockingly, the three movies failed to gather respectable numbers in theaters overall and ended up with a single-digit closing share.

Following his previous releases, Nithin’s Thammudu becomes a bigger disaster than Robinhood and Extraordinary Man.

If we go back, Nithiin’s movies like Rang De and Macherla Niyojaka Vargam were also box office failures, but they did some respectable numbers even after bad reviews. But his last 3 recent films could not do so.

The shocking part is Thammudu’s worldwide closing share is just around 2.5 Cr, which is lower than Robinhood and Extra Ordinary Man’s final numbers.

A 75 Cr budget film ending up with a 2.5 Cr share is a truly shocking thing, not only for the producers but also for the trade.

Mahesh Babu’s Athadu Re-Release will be affected by New Films

Mahesh Babu’s Athadu Re-Release faces heat from new films. From July 24, there are continuous releases of biggies, with the first one being Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu.

So, the re-release of Athadu will have an impact on screen count, and finding big audiences for a re-release when multiple new films are getting released will also be very tough.

Most middle-class audiences cannot spend money on multiple films at a time.

In a normal scenario, also, the re-releases work big in the dry period, but from the end of July, the theaters will be heavily crowded with biggies.

Senior advocate John Sathyan, representing Srikanth, argued that his client was arrested solely based on a confession from the main suspect, Pradeep Kumar, who alleged that Srikanth used drugs. However, he pointed out that no drugs were found on Srikanth. “Srikanth was at home playing with his child when the police arrived and arrested him,” said John Sathyan.

In response, the prosecution argued that during the investigation of a murder attempt case involving former AIADMK member Prasath, details about the drug smuggling operation emerged.

Following Prasath’s confession, the main suspect, Praveen Kumar, was arrested, and based on Praveen Kumar’s statement, Srikanth was arrested on June 23 and Krishna on June 26, according to the government counsel.
