Back-to-back big setbacks for NTR

In the case of regional films, the result of previous films may not have a great impact on the next films as star heroes have a great following and capability to pull the audience. Star heroes can create buzz irrespective of combination and other factors. However, when it is a pan-India film, a lot of things need to work in favour of the film. Something similar is happening with 2 of NTR’s upcoming projects. When NTR signed War 2 everyone thought it would be a huge film for NTR in Bollywood as the YRF spy series films like Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, and Pathaan were blockbusters.

But, the failure of Tiger 3 which is the latest installment in the YRF spy universe has changed everything. The audience rejected the film and it is believed that they are bored of this genre and a saturation point has been reached already. Due to this reason, YRF dropped the idea of a much-hyped Tiger vs Pathaan film. For War 2 all the pre-production work has been completed and shooting started with body doubles for action episodes Unfortunately, there is no hype and anticipation for the film as of now because of spy series is not working for audiences.

Tiger 3 result proved that and this genre is appealing only to a limited set of north audiences and south audiences have usually rejected these movies. So there will be a lot of hurdles to pass for the film to create buzz at the pan-India level.

While this is one hurdle that Tarak will have to cross, another is coming up in the form of his film with Prashanth Neel.

NTR’s other upcoming film is committed with Prashant Neel. Everyone knows Prashant Neel has a huge brand at pan India level. With the KGF series and with Salaar his brand was expected to grow much bigger. But surprisingly, Salaar is doing well only in Telugu and disappointing in other languages. Even non-Telugu audiences are fed up with KGF-style narration and movie setup from Prashant Neel. NTR’s look which was released some time back is also in the same style which is already attracting some negativity for the project.

A few months ago War 2 and Prashant Neel films were seen as a sure-shot blockbuster lineup. But now, with Tiger 3 and Salaar, it has changed. The team has to come up with a lot of exciting stuff to attract all sections of audiences, failing which the movies could fail to create any hype.

The films released on Sankranthi are Dhanush’s Captain Miller Captain, Siva Karthikeyan’s Ayalaan, Vijay Sethupathi’s Merry Christmas, and Arun Vijay’s Mission. Apart from Mission, all the other Tamil films have planned a parallel release in Telugu states, too, but as Sankranthi is packed with Telugu movies, there is no chance for these films to get theatres. 

In a recent interaction with the media, Producer Dil Raju also confirmed that there are not enough theaters for our Telugu movies here, so we cannot give theaters for dubbing movies. He said Telugu movies would be prioritized first, and they will provide theaters for the Telugu movies. After that, dubbing films can be accommodated if any remaining theaters exist.

So, there won’t be any room for Tamil releases next Sankranthi because of the high number of Telugu films lined up. Allocating a minimum number of screens for Tamil films would be challenging due to the more significant business being done for Telugu films. Guntur Kaaram, Hanuman Saindhav, and Eagle have been made on huge budgets. All the Tamil films may be released in Telugu after the completion of the Sankranthi holidays.

By collecting 51.5 Cr Share in four days, Salaar achieved the non-Rajamouli record in Nizam. Salaar became the third biggest share film after RRR and BB 2 in Nizam. The film’s Nizam theatrical business is valued at 65Cr, and the movie has recovered more than 80% in just four days, it will be the first territory for the film to achieve the break-even mark.

With the New Year weekend advantage, the film Salaar: Part 1 Ceasefire is expected to do a minimum of 70Cr share in Nizam.

Salaar collects almost 377 Crores for 4 days

Telugu states the film collected 150Cr Gross for four days while it gathered 30Cr Gross in Karnataka. Tamil Nadu’s Gross is 15Cr, while the Kerala and North India Gross figures stand at 11.5Cr and 80Cr, respectively. Several major multiplexes especially the national chains are now strictly following the rule of Censor certification. Prashanth Neel’s Salaar which received an ‘A’ certificate from the censor board is now facing a major brunt of this strict implementation. Prashant Neel has expressed his disappointment with Salaar receiving an A censor certificate and the implications that it is facing now.

“I’m very disappointed because the movie isn’t vulgar; it showcases necessary violence. When I conveyed the same to Prabhas, he advised me to go for an A certificate,” said Prashant Neel during the promotional interview with SS Rajamouli. “As censor team changes guidelines we do not have chance to go with U/A as they are asking many cuts so we decided to go with ‘A’, “he added.

Now Salaar is facing the impact of this strict implementation. Normally in Telugu states a majority of theatres do not follow these guidelines. But for Salaar, the national chains and a few Plexes are strictly following the guidelines. Many families who went to PVR theatres with kids faced a setback as the staff did not allow the kids by saying Salaar was an ‘A’ certificate film. Dil Raju said no one forced Sankranthi producers on the release date. It is widely known that Guntur Kaaram, Eagle, Saindhavi, Naa Saami Ranga, and Hanuman are among the theatrical releases that will be released this Sankranthi season. Recently, Dil Raju organized a meeting with the producers to persuade them to avoid the Sankranthi clash, which would benefit each of them. In the latest press meeting, he revealed that as the president of the Telugu Film Chamber, he arranged a meeting with good intentions but not to warn or force anyone.

“We spoke with the producers. We want all films to get equal justice. Guntur Kaaram is a big film, and it is certain to be released during the festival season. Suppose any other producers return and opt out of the Sankranthi season. In that case, the council will take the initiative to secure a solo release whenever they want to arrive later.” Dil Raju said.

This Sankranthi has multiple releases, which the producers’ council is concerned about. Sankranthi typically has 3 or 4 mainstream films. This time, five movies are noteworthy. Dil Raju said no one forced Sankranthi producers on the release date.

The top producer said he postponed his movie, Family Star’s release from Sankranthi, as the works were unfinished. According to the words of Dil Raju, the Producers Council will wait till December 28th. If any film unit or producer comes forward to move out of the Sankranthi race, the council will make it so that the film gets a suitable solo release date.

“We have met Telangana Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and he promised to arrange a meeting with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. I will let you know once the date is fixed,” said Dil Raju. His film ‘Family Star’ with Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur has been pushed to summer 2024 release.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal has created a box-office storm and has consistently performed well across territories since its release. The film did well last weekend despite the new releases of Dunki and Salaar.

Animal managed to collect Rs 5Cr net in India for the weekend. Total India’s net collection is now 538Cr; the gross is Rs 650Cr while the overseas gross is 230Cr. The total worldwide gross now stands at Rs 880 crores.
