Following the debacle of Tenet (2020), Christopher Nolan made a strong comeback into mainstream cinema with the biographical drama film Oppenheimer (2023). Starring Colin Murphy in the titular role, it narrates the story of American theorist Julius Robert Oppenheimer, who’s known for developing the first nuclear weapons.

Releasing in July last year, the action thriller film received highly positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for Nolan’s direction, visuals, musical score, and performances by the cast. With a closing figure of $960 million, it emerged as the highest-grossing biographical film of all time. It performed fairly well in India, too. For those who’ve missed this big-screen spectacle in theatres, here’s how you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home. Jio Cinema, which bought the film’s streaming rights in India for an undisclosed price, has scheduled the release date for March 21, 2024.

Produced by Syncopy and Atlas Entertainment, the film also features Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh in supporting roles. Based on the biographical novel American Prometheus (2005), the film chronicles the career of Oppenheimer, focusing on his studies, the direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing.

Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ 3 Demands: OTT, Tax, Cricket Streaming

Tamil Nadu theaters are facing very tough times as audiences are not coming to the theaters. Many theaters are shutting down this year and converting into other businesses. With this, the Tamil Nadu Theaters Association met and came up with three demands.

1. OTT Streaming: New films should stream on OTT platforms only after 8 weeks (56 days) from their theatrical release. Currently, most Tamil films, especially big releases, are being premiered after just 4 weeks (28 days).

2. Tax: Removal of the 8% Local Body Entertainment Tax (LBET).

3. Cricket Streaming: Permission to telecast live matches in theaters.

It remains to be seen how the government and producers will respond to these demands. Theater owners need these three demands to be fulfilled to sustain their businesses.

Guntur Kaaram On Netflix

In the 1st week, the Telugu version of Guntur Kaaram trends at the number one position in India. The Telugu version garners 2 million viewers, while the Hindi version attracts 1.1 million viewers, both trending globally in the Top 10 for the 1st week. In the 2nd week, the movie continues to register massive viewership. The Hindi version trends globally at the 8th position in the 2nd week with 1.8 million viewership and 3.7 million viewing hours. The Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil versions of Guntur Kaaram in India trended in the top 10.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Make Crucial Decision on OTT Window

We are seeing the rise of OTT and it is directly impacting the theatre owners a lot. With the rise of OTT, producers are getting much more money through digital rights and this has also led to the rise of remunerations of heroes and all cast and crew. The ones who have been adversely impacted are the exhibitors as now movies are streaming in just 4 weeks and several sections audience are ready to wait out 4 week OTT window and watch the movies from the comforts of their home rather than going to theatres.

Due to this short OTT streaming window after the theatrical release, the theatres are not even registering 20% – 30% occupancies on many days in a month. Theatre owners are unable to sustain their businesses and are unable to recover rents and theatre maintenance charges. Foreseeing this challenge, the Hindi Multiplex association had taken a decision long back of 8 week window for OTT releases. According to this, a movie can be released only after 8 weeks on OTT.

But in south India, no such decision has been taken to counter this OTT challenge and finally, Kerala and Tamil Nadu theatre owners are taking a crucial step by demanding 6 weeks – 8 weeks OTT window for upcoming films, or else they are ready to boycott the release on their theatres. Now OTT market is also going down and the producers have to depend on theatrical revenue only.

For many of films, the audience are not even coming to theaters and waiting for the OTT release. In Telugu states, multiple meetings have happened on this issue but a proper resolution was not possible. We need to see whether Tamil Nadu and Kerala theatre owners are able to execute their plans and bring a 6-8 week window on OTT releases or not.

Operation Valentine: A Must-Win Battle Against Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter

Varun Tej’s Operation Valentine was initially planned to be released in December 1st week. But, due to some delays, the movie was pushed for later. Due to this delay, the movie is releasing on March 1st. It would have been better if the movie had been released earlier as direct comparisons are being made with Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter as they have similar storylines and lead hero characterization.

Both films are aerial combat films and are inspired by the same events. Recently Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter was released and it opened with unanimous positive reviews but audiences were not fully connected with the film which resulted in the movie’s underperfomance at the Box office. 

Now Operation Valentine is releasing in Hindi along with Telugu. To make solid numbers, the movie must open with a talk that’s better than Fighter. Varun Tej has accepted that the comparisons will be there as both have a similar script he believes in output and emotional connect in the film. The trailer is out now and promises heavy action with the right emotions.

Varun Tej will be seen as an IAF officer and he has taken intense training for his character. Manushi Chhillar who played the leading lady will be seen in the role of a radar officer. Navdeep and Ruhani Sharma are the other prominent cast.

Shakti Pratap Singh Hada is making his debut as a director with the movie produced by Sony Pictures International Productions. Operation Valentine will grace the cinemas in Telugu and Hindi on March 1st.
