How patriarchal is the Telugu Film Industry?

0

Recent comments by Radhika Apte on the Telugu film Industry stirred up the debate about Patriarchy in the Telugu film Industry. Her comments were specifically against Male Chauvinism in the industry. Having starred in only a handful of Telugu films, how true are her comments, let’s dig.

The Telugu Film Industry, like most industries in the country, is Male-centric as in Patriarchal. As in, most prominent positions in a film, both in front and behind the screens, are tied to men. Starting with the on-screen prominence for men, a handful of roles that were created in the contemporary world over the last decade would be Keerthy Suresh’s in ‘Mahanati’, Anushka’s in ‘Miss Shetty & Mr. Polishetty’ and Samantha’s in ‘Baby’ etc., Every other film that comes out especially the biggies, have a mere, doll-like role for women. Even if that is not the case, more often than not, the girl isn’t smart or needs a saving from the guy. The most recent biggies, ‘Guntur Kaaram’ and ‘Salaar’, hardly have any prominence for the lead actresses. The industry revolves around the top 6 superstars, pushing the writers and directors to make projects match or build on their stardom.

Coming to the off-screen prominence, you rarely see a female technician in TFI. Nandini Reddy of ‘Ala Modalaindi’ fame and Sudha Kongara of ‘Guru’ fame are a few familiar names. In general, Patriarchy is often intertwined with either Narcissism or Male Chauvinism, and most of the big stars despite their good off-screen behavior tend to fall prey to one or the other as a side effect of their stardom. Few Superstars, till recently had a habit of forgetting about mentioning his female leads in pre-release events, which could be of valid reasons but could imply otherwise to the onlookers. Few Senior Heroes openly hit their subordinates on camera hinting at their monarch-like behavior which is again, intertwined with patriarchy.

The most recent example would be a director complaining funnily on stage that the heroine wasn’t offering hugs to him. One could not stop wondering why women( or their families) are not encouraged to get into the film industry ultimately leading to Patriarchy. After all, maybe the industry should learn a thing or two from what Radhika Apte complained about.

Dunki Scores Big on Netflix: Records Massive Viewership Numbers

0

Dunki releases on Christmas weekend with Salaar in Clash. The movie has collected 470 crore gross worldwide and emerges as the third-biggest grosser for Shahrukh Khan. But compared with Jawan and Pathaan, the numbers are pretty ordinary and disappointing.

The film started streaming on Netflix on February 15th, and it continues to trend globally [non-English films] and is currently trending in the No. 1 position in India. In the 1st week [4 days], Dunki clocks 4.9 million views, and in the 2nd week, the movie clocks 4.2 million views, continuing the sensational trend.

For a total of 11 days, the movie clocks 9.1 million views with 24.1 million streaming hours. It trended better than Jawan on Netflix; Jawan for 11 days clocks 8.9 million viewers with 25.5 million hours viewed.

The brand of Raj Kumar Hirani is also one of the main reasons for massive viewership. There have been a lot of expectations at the box office for this combination before its release, but the film genre fails to connect the actors in these areas. In OTT, it seems to be working decently, but still, most people felt it was a decent film but not a Raj Kumar Hirani-directed film.

Vidhyut’s Crakk was released last weekend it did not work at the Box office following which the action star took to Twitter and publicly named the critic.

The critic Sumit Kadel has also responded to this accusation from Vidyut through a long Twitter post. He claimed Vidyut is merely targeting him for an old incident that happened during the movie promotions. Coming to Crakk’s collections, the film is on its way to be a box-office disaster and has done a business of just ₹ 8.81 cr over the weekend with weekdays seeing a bigger dip.

The Wait Continues: IMAX Update Disappoints Hyderabad Moviegoers

0

While most major Indian cities boast IMAX screens, Hyderabad moviegoers will have to wait a bit longer for this immersive movie experience.

Prasads Multiplex, once synonymous with IMAX in Hyderabad, converted its screen to a PCX screen due to several factors. The digitization of filmmaking and content delivery, coupled with rising costs and ticket price restrictions in Telangana, made IMAX less viable for the theater.

Recent social media buzz suggested that the wait might finally be over, with rumors pointing to an IMAX screen opening at the soon-to-be-launched ART Cinemas, a collaboration between Raviteja and Asian Cinemas. However, these rumors were quickly squashed by the IMAX India Vice President, who confirmed on social media that this is not the case. He replied to a user’s query with a simple “No, it’s not true!”

So, Hyderabadi film enthusiasts who dream of experiencing cinema on a grander scale will have to hold onto their patience. While there’s no official confirmation of future plans, the wait for an IMAX theater in Hyderabad continues.

Indian 2 Box Office: Two Epic Targets

0

The first part of “Indian” was a sensational blockbuster across India, working well in all languages. Now, “Indian 2” is set to release this May. The movie aims for two box office targets: one is to become the Kollywood industry hit, and the second is to reach the 1000Cr mark.

Kollywood eagerly awaits a film that succeeds in all languages. “2PointO” is the current industry hit of Kollywood, grossing 700Cr. While the movie performed exceptionally well in Hindi and Telugu, it didn’t fare as well in Tamil. This was why it fell short of the 1000Cr mark. Films like “Leo,” “Jailer,” and “Ponniyin Selvan” didn’t perform well in the northern markets, with “Ponniyin Selvan” being limited to Tamil markets only. Consequently, Kollywood is yet to produce a 1000Cr grosser. Tollywood has achieved this feat twice, and Sandalwood once.

Kollywood is hopeful that “Indian 2” has a chance because it has the potential to work well in all languages if it matches the range of the first part. The film must succeed in all languages, especially considering it’s part of a series, with “Indian 3” to follow. Shankar has two targets with “Indian 2”: to surpass “2PointO” and become the Kollywood industry hit, and to reach the 1000Cr mark. The team plans to release a teaser with the release date in early March. The entire Telugu states business is already closed.
