Story
Shenbagam, affectionately known as Shenba (Priyanka Arul Mohan), is a young woman from Kolappalur, Tamil Nadu, who has been captivated by Korea since childhood. Her dream of visiting Korea remains her greatest aspiration. She loves her childhood friend Mani (Rishikanth) and elopes with him, disregarding her father’s wishes.
However, Shenba experiences a devastating shock when Mani abandons her en route, leaving her stranded in Seoul. Facing this volatile situation, the story follows her journey of finding strength and standing on her own in an unfamiliar country.
Performances
Priyanka Arul Mohan delivers a neat and suitable performance as Shenba. The actress, known for her work in Captain Miller, is particularly effective in emotional scenes. Kim Young-ok delivers a solid performance in a crucial role, while Rishikanth and others are fine in their respective parts.
Analysis
Director Ra. Karthik takes a simple story and narrates it naturally. The subject has a strong message at its heart, but it is conveyed in a subtle manner. The story and proceedings are not completely fresh, but the film has several genuinely worked heartfelt moments.
For example, there is no emotional backstory to justify Shenba’s love for Korea—she simply wants to go there because she likes it. This simplicity is the USP of the movie. The approach perfectly works when an elderly lady gets a chance to fulfill her dream alongside Shenba achieving her success.
However, the film suffers from predictability at times, particularly in the first half hour. The side track of Shenba’s friends who perform as a music band also feels underdeveloped. The way this track is linked to Shenba’s main goal near the end looks rushed and slightly unconvincing.
Positives:
- Performances
- Heartfelt Scenes and Dialogues
- Music/Visuals
Negatives:
- Initial Dull Moments
- A Few Rushed Parts in the latter half
Made in Korea Review and Verdict:
Ra Karthik’s Made in Korea is a nice, straightforward feel-good drama. Priyanka Arul Mohan, who has been making waves in Telugu cinema with projects like OG, and the ensemble cast deliver performances that work well for the film. Despite a few predictable and slow moments, the film’s heartfelt approach and emotional core make it a decent watch for those looking for a simple, feel-good story on Netflix.
