Gautham Menon Ordered to Pay ₹4.25 Crore by Madras High Court

The Madras High Court recently dismissed an appeal filed by acclaimed film director Gautham Vasudev Menon and his production house, Photon Factory, in a long-standing financial dispute. The court has ordered Menon to repay ₹4.25 crore plus interest to R.S. Infotainment, marking a significant development in a case that dates back over a decade.

Court Orders Repayment with Interest

On March 23, 2026, a Division Bench of the Madras High Court upheld a 2022 order requiring Gautham Menon to repay the principal amount along with steep interest charges. The director, whose ambitious project Dhruva Natchathiram has faced prolonged delays, must now pay 12% annual interest calculated from May 2010. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay ₹12 lakh in litigation costs to R.S. Infotainment.

The case highlights the financial risks in film production, similar to other high-profile disputes like the legal battle between Shankar and Lyca Productions over Indian 2.

Background of the Financial Dispute

The dispute stems from a 2008 agreement for a film tentatively titled “Production No. 6,” which never went into production. R.S. Infotainment, led by producer S. Elred Kumar, provided advance payment for the project. When production failed to materialize despite the advance, the company filed suit in 2013.

Gautham Menon claimed the funds were utilized for his 2012 romantic drama “Neethaane En Ponvasantham.” However, the court found no supporting evidence linking the advance payment to that production. Records showed the 2012 film was made under a separate agreement signed in 2011, contradicting Menon’s defense.

What This Means for Gautham Menon

With interest accumulating since 2010, the total amount owed significantly exceeds the original ₹4.25 crore principal. This financial burden comes at a challenging time for the director, who has been working to revive his career momentum. Despite recent success with STR collaborations, this court order adds pressure on the filmmaker’s production ventures.

The ruling serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of clear financial documentation in film production agreements.
