Gone are the days when a film’s success was determined by only its content. Now, along with content, factors like promotions, social media activity, and even directors’ and actors’ statements made in past are impacting the movie’s collection.
The recent debacle of Laal Singh Chaddha is the best example of the same. Aamir Khan’s film was called for a boycott with social media being abuzz with anti-film trends weeks before its release.
Back in Tollywood, something similar happened with two recent Tollywood releases, Ramarao On Duty and Macherla Niyojakavargam. Ramarao On Duty director Sarath Mandava’s sarcastic statement on the audience about trusting Twitter reviews started a negative vibe around the film. While the film lacked in content as well, the director’s statement certainly had an impact on the film.
Similarly, Twitterati targeted Macherla Niyojakavargam director M.S Rajasekhar Reddy for his inflammatory old tweets where he reportedly made caste-based social media posts. This created a lot of dissent in the non-YCP fans. M.S Rajashekhar Reddy even filed a cyber crime case claiming these Tweets were not his.
These events have certainly made one thing clear to the film industry guys. Be careful about the statements as they might come back to bite in future.
