Our 418 review: the film is the latest horror thriller backed by Mythri Movie Makers and directed by Kirtan Nadagouda. It drew decent hype with its promos, and Prashanth Neel presenting it added to the buzz. Let us find out how the film has turned out.
418 Story
The plot centers on a medical college building in a village that has remained sealed and abandoned for 15 years. The mystery revolves around Room No. 418, which hides a dark and terrifying secret.
The story kicks off when a youngster arrives in the room next to it. He faces some unexpected incidents and tries to uncover the truth behind them.
Performances
Surya Raj and Charan Lakkaraju are decent in their roles and bring out the vulnerable angle. Chaithra J. Achar plays a crucial role, and her performance is apt. Preethi Pagadala, Shashank Patil and Ramesh Indira are fine.
Analysis
418 marks the feature directorial debut of Kirtan Nadagouda. It was promoted as a never-before-seen film that would deliver a terrifying horror experience. But the film turns out to be a clichéd horror movie that uses all the formulaic tropes.
It follows the set pattern of many horror films: an old haunted location, a spirit with an unfulfilled ambition, and mysterious incidents leading to the backstory.
Some scenes in the first half work well, delivering the scary feel with jump scares. However, others feel sluggish as the pace slows down at times.
In the second half, the buildup to the backstory is good, and the way it starts is decent. But it fails to create the desired impact as it progresses. Some moments work, yet nothing extraordinary happens.
The motivation behind the main character feels silly. The climax feels somewhat drawn out, and the twists are not great, with the final one’s execution being messy.
Positives
- Sound Design
- Interval Buildup
- Few Scary Scenes
Negatives
- Clichéd Traits of a Horror Movie
- Sluggish Pacing in Several Moments
- Uneven Feel in the Second Half
- Convoluted Handling of the Final Twist
418 Review and Verdict
418 is a formulaic horror thriller that benefits from good sound design and a few jump scares that deliver impact. The film moves at a sluggish pace, lacks freshness, and several sequences are uneven. Viewers who enjoy the horror genre can watch it without much expectation.
