2023 Box office update: All remake films are disasters

Tollywood saw several remakes this year with all these films failing to make a mark at the box office. This could be a case of audience being already being familiar with the story thanks to the advent of OTT or just a case of poor presentation. Let’s take a look at some of these remake films that went on to become box office disasters of Tollywood.

1. Butta Bomma: A remake of Malayalam blockbuster Kappela, the film starred Anikha Surendran, Arjun Das and Surya Vashista in lead roles. The film failed to recreate the magic of the original film and emerged as a big failure in Telugu.
2. Hunt – Sudheer Babu’s cop-drama Hunt was a remake of the iconic Malayalam film Mumbai Police that starred Prithviraj Sukumaran. While the film had an engaging concept, the presentation was rather dull and it saw poor reviews and word of mouth on its release.
3. Ravanasura – Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja’s Ravanasura was a remake of Bengali film Vinci Da. The film featured Ravi Teja in negative shades and created great buzz with its posters and promotional content. However, it couldn’t stand up to the hype and failed.
4. Rangamarthanda – A remake of remake of Marathi film Natasamrat, the remake starred Prakash Raj, Ramya Krishna, and Brahmanandam in key roles. The performances of the senior actors were the film’s highlight. Unfortunately, despite receiving critical acclaim, Rangamarthanda couldn’t emerge as a box-office success.
5. Bro – Powerstar Pawan Kalyan’s remake of the Tamil film Vinodhya Sitham was another much-hyped box-office failure of 2023. Directed by Samuthirakani, the film featured Pawan Kalyan as the time god with Sai Dharam Tej also featuring in the fantasy drama
6. Bhola Shankar – Mega Star Chiranjeevi starred in this remake Ajith’s Tamil superhit Vedalam. Directed by Meher Ramesh, changes were made to attract Telugu audience. The film was the biggest diaster of Chiranjeevi’s career and saw deficits right in its initial days.
