Sai Dharam Tej’s supernatural thriller Virupaksha is the latest Tollywood release this week. The film has managed to create good interest amongst the audience and the trailers and promotions have helped a lot in hyping the movie. The genre, the unit’s confidence, and positive inside talk have all built great expectations for the film. But, does the film have enough to keep the audience hooked? Let’s find out.

Story: The story takes place in Rudravanam village where a bad incident forces a lockdown of the village. The village sees multiple deaths with many suspecting black magic and supernatural involvement. What’s the mystery behind these events and how Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) finds the cause and saves the village is the story.

Performances:  Sai Dharam Tej has done a solid job and justified his role as a guy trying to save the village from mysterious issues while simultaneously trying to woo the girl he loves. Samyuktha has a meaty role, looks great, and has given great support to Sai Dharam Tej. Special mention to the BGM and sound design, both these elements helped immensely in giving an immersive experience to the audience and were successful in taking the audience to Rudravanam. The climax portions along with the subsequent twist were well depicted.

Analysis: While the movie was engaging and gave an overall thrilling experience, the love track felt out of place and cliched. The track was perhaps the weakest point of the film and seemed to unnecessarily drag. Overall it is a decent attempt from the debut director. The movie manages to transport you successfully right from the very first scene. The supernatural elements and their involvement in the story are neatly set up giving the audience and good idea of what’s to follow over the next couple of hours.

Plus Points:

  • Sai Dharam Tej
  • Engaging screenplay in 2nd half
  • BGM
  • Sound Design

Minus Points:

  • Cliched Love Track
  • Weak emotions

Verdict:

Virupaksha’s main strength lies in its technical values. The cinematography, sound, and set design all collaborate seamlessly to give you an immersive experience. The screenplay is another major asset of the movie and all these elements combined make Virupaksha a joy to watch on the big screen.
