Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif starrer Merry Christmas was released on 12th January amidst great expectations and buzz due to the movie’s unique casting. Sriram Raghavan, whose last film Andhadhun was a blockbuster success, also created some curiosity about the movie due to its intriguing trailers and posters.
The movie was released to good reviews and critical applause and opened with 2Cr opening and collected around 3Cr on Saturday. Unfortunately, the collections didn’t see a jump on Sunday and the overall weekend collections were average with 8Cr+ nett collected. The film’s biggest test was on Monday where the movie witnessed a massive drop and managed around Rs 1 crore collection.
Merry Christmas is expected to close around the 15Cr range nett and is heading towards a big disaster. The film was also released in Tamil but didn’t perform well despite Vijay Sethupathi’s presence as the audience showed interest only in Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan and Dhanush’s Captain Miller. Overall, the movie did not work well despite positive reviews and showing great promise.
Merry Christmas also stars Sanjay Kapoor, Tinnu Anand, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kazmi, Radhika Apte, and Ashwini Kalsekar. The mystery thriller is set is an earlier time period against the backdrop of Mumbai.
