Suriya, after back-to-back successes with Karuppu and Vishwanath & Sons, is back with Scene, directed by Jithu Madhavan of Aakasam fame. Naslen plays the villain and Nazriya is the female lead, and the film has generated good anticipation. Here is our Scene review.
Scene Story
Suriya plays Inbaraj, a police officer who submits his resignation. He has no strong reason, so his superior rejects it. Meanwhile, a dead body turns up on the city’s outskirts.
It connects to an old case that Inbaraj himself had closed. The rest of the film shows how he finds the killer and solves the case.
Performances
Suriya looks uber cool and delivers a perfect performance, commanding the screen from first shot to last. Naslen impresses in the antagonist role. He keeps the character fun and unpredictable, and his screen presence is very good.
Nazriya makes a good impression, while Lal, Anand Raj and others are apt.
Analysis
Scene is directed by Jithu Madhavan, known for Romanchakam and Aavesham. The film starts on a strong note, establishing Naslen‘s character as a serial killer and showing how he operates.
Then Suriya‘s character is introduced with a quirky touch. Some ordinary stretches follow, but the film gets better after a crucial twist that mixes fun with the murder investigation.
Just when things should get more interesting, the second half goes off track. The romance portions between Suriya and Nazriya are not that great. The idea of using Suriya‘s parents in the investigation is good, but it does not land well, as some scenes involving them work and a few do not.
Naslen‘s character goes missing for a while. The narrative picks up pace once Suriya starts connecting all the dots against him. The climax is entertaining and delivers the punch.
Positives
- Main plot
- Interesting and entertaining scenes
- Performances
- Last half an hour
Negatives
- The Suriya–Naslen game could have been handled better
- A few overstretched parts
- Not-so-interesting scenes in the initial second half
Scene Review Verdict
Scene benefits from a unique plot and quirky treatment. The film has some fun moments, and the last half hour really works. The performances are good too. If only the screenplay were tighter and the game between Suriya and Naslen hit harder, this would have been much more than a usual average film.
