The biggest casting question around Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 has been answered. Sai Pallavi has been confirmed as the replacement for Deepika Padukone in Nag Ashwin’s sequel, and she will join the shoot in November. The team is likely to make the official announcement directly from the shooting sets.
Filling the Most Important Role
This is not a small role to take over. In Kalki 2898 AD, Deepika Padukone played Sumathi, also known as SUM-80, the woman carrying the unborn Kalki, the final avatar of Lord Vishnu. The entire story of the first part revolved around protecting her, with Prabhas’s Bhairava and Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama fighting to keep her safe from Kamal Haasan’s Supreme Yaskin.
With the sequel continuing that story, Sumathi remains at the centre of the film, and the actress playing her needed to carry the same emotional weight.
Why Sai Pallavi Fits
Sai Pallavi is one of the most respected performers in Indian cinema today, known for strong, emotional roles rather than glamour. Films like Fidaa, Shyam Singa Roy, Love Story and Thandel made her a favourite with Telugu audiences, while Amaran showed her ability to carry intense emotional drama on a big scale.
For a character like Sumathi, which depends on vulnerability, strength and screen presence, Sai Pallavi is a natural choice. Her casting also adds to Kalki 2’s pan-India appeal, as she has a strong following across Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam audiences.
Kalki 2 Back on Track
The sequel’s shoot first began in February this year with Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan on a massive set in Hyderabad. After a short schedule, the film went into a long pause as the team waited for Prabhas’s dates. The regular shoot is now resuming, and with Sai Pallavi joining in November, the sequel is finally moving forward at full speed.
Director Nag Ashwin is aiming to wrap the shoot by mid-2027, with Kalki 2 targeting a 2028 release. The film is produced by Vyjayanthi Movies.
Sai Pallavi’s Biggest Phase Yet
Kalki 2 adds to what is already the biggest phase of Sai Pallavi’s career. She plays Sita in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, which releases on November 5, the same month she joins the Kalki sets. She also pairs with Vijay Sethupathi for the first time in Mani Ratnam’s Inji Vellam, which is set for a January 2027 release.
With Ramayana, a Mani Ratnam love story and now Kalki 2, Sai Pallavi is part of three of the most awaited Indian films of the next two years.
Official Announcement Coming Soon
The makers are expected to officially announce Sai Pallavi’s casting once she joins the shoot. Fans can expect a special welcome post or video from the sets, which will also mark her first collaboration with Prabhas and Nag Ashwin.
