Suriya’s latest release Retro opened to an encouraging start at the box office, grossing around ₹33 crore worldwide on its first day. In India, the film earned approximately ₹24 crore gross on day one, signaling strong initial interest. However, the momentum did not sustain, as day two collections dropped significantly, falling to single digits. Early estimates suggest that the film managed only around ₹9 crore gross across India on its second day—a noticeable decline.
The film witnessed a dip across all regions, including its stronghold Tamil Nadu. The combination of mixed word-of-mouth and the weekday effect appears to have negatively impacted its performance. Particularly in the Telugu-speaking states, Retro saw a steep crash in collections.
Despite the dip, there were some positive signs on day two. Evening and night shows in Tamil Nadu experienced slight growth, and the advance bookings for day three are reportedly better than those for day two. For Retro to maintain a healthy weekend total, significant jumps on Saturday and Sunday are now crucial. The coming days will determine whether the film can bounce back or fade after a promising start.
