When we think of the best directors in Indian cinema, one director that pops up in our heads first is undeniably Mani Ratnam. In a career spanning nearly 4 long decades, Mani Ratnam conquered Pan-Indian cinema before it was cool.

Mani Ratnam has directed movies in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam as well as Hindi. He has worked with the likes of Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Mohanlal, Mammooty, and Shah Rukh Khan. When a Mani Ratnam movie was released in theatres, it was surely going to be money well spent.

For the past couple of years, Mani Ratnam has been tightly holding onto his passion project Ponniyan Selvan. Due to the large scale and setting of the film, the director was apprehensive about going on floors.

But after looking at the way Rajamouli successfully pulled off a mammoth task in the form of the Baahubali franchise, he decided to start working on Ponniyan Selvan. Mani Ratnam said that “Rajamouli’s Bahubali is my inspiration for Ponniyan Selvan.”
