Pushpa 2 is currently India’s biggest grosser, and the film released in Japan this weekend and opened to poor numbers. Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna actively promoted the film by giving multiple interviews to the media and attending theater screenings.
But surprisingly, Pushpa 2: The Rule witnessed one of the most underwhelming openings ever for an Indian film in Japan, especially when compared to major Indian theatrical releases in recent years. According to Mimorin tracking data, the film managed to sell only around 886 tickets on Day 1, which is far below expectations and failed to place it among the top Indian openings in Japan.
Pushpa 2 falls short of other Telugu biggies in Japan
In contrast, films like RRR (8,230 admissions), Saaho (6,510), Kalki 2898 AD (3,700), and many others recorded 1,000+ footfalls on their opening day in Japan. Compared to these, Pushpa 2’s start with just 886 footfalls is very disappointing.
However, one major thing about the Japanese market is that if a film connects with audiences, it can have a very long and strong run – RRR is the latest example. Now, it remains to be seen how Pushpa 2 performs with Japanese audiences in the coming days.
