Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan is only a few days away from its release and the hype is unreal. It is the most ambitious project in the history of Tamil cinema and also the dream project of India’s most celebrated director. The advance bookings of the film are impressive and record openings are expected.
The film is expected to open with record numbers for the Tamil version. Currently, Thalapathy Vijay holds the record for the highest opening with Beast at around 75 crores gross. It is important to note that this is only for the Tamil version. Ponniyin Selvan is on track to break this record with good word of mouth from the audience.
While the excitement in Tamil Nadu cannot be matched, there is a lot of buzz for Ponniyin Selvan in the other languages as well. Including all versions, Rajinikanth’s 2.0 and Kabali are the top 2 openers with 95 crores and 90 crores respectively. Going by the current trend, Ponniyin Selvan might inch past these numbers but we have to wait till 30th September to find out.
The film boasts of a stellar star cast comprising some of the biggest names in Indian cinema. It stars Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Karthi, Chiyaan Vikram, and Jayam Ravi in the lead roles. Ravi Varman is the man behind the lens and AR Rahman is the music director.
