Ponniyin Selvan Continues its box office storm and crosses the 350Cr mark

South Indian legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan-1 based on the eponymous novel by Kalki, continues to perform well at the box office. As per trade sources, the film has earned more than 325 crore gross globally in seven days. Ponniyin Selvan-1 was released in theatres worldwide on September 30 in five languages – Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. The period film is creating new records at the box office with each passing day.

As said above, the movie crossed 325 Cr in the first week and it will cross the 350Cr gross mark by today. The weekend has started on a super strong note and now the movie is heading toward the 400Cr mark. The film is expected to do 500Cr in a full run. This Pan-Indian movie is performing not only in the Tamil version but the Hindi version is also doing very well, The movie has crossed 15Cr net in Hindi.

In the Telugu states, Ponniyin Selvan-1 had a good opening weekend but after that, it crashed totally. It might miss the break-even mark in the Telugu version but that doesn’t take away its huge success overall.

Ponniyin Selvan-1 tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who later became the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014). The Tamil audience welcomed this movie with their hearts, they have been waiting a very long time for this movie. We can say that it is not only the dream project of Maniratnam but also the Tamil people’s too.

The film stars Jayam Ravi, Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Aishwarya Lekshmi among others. Ponniyin Selvan-1 marked Aishwarya Rai’s comeback to Tamil cinema after a decade. Aishwarya plays dual roles – Nandini and her mute mother Mandakini Devi.

The second part of Ponniyin Selvan will be released in cinemas next year. Filmmaker Mani Ratnam recently said in a media interaction that he was happy he could make the film into two parts, and release part 1 now as audiences are keen to watch a film in multiple parts.
