Director Mani Ratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan-1 is having a extraordinary run at theatres worldwide. Even after almost three weeks of its theatrical release, the film shows no signs of slowing down and is still strong at the box office.
According to trade circles, theatres in Tamil Nadu are still willing to screen Ponniyin Selvan despite new Diwali releases, Sivakarthikeyan’s Prince and Karthi’s Sardar. This shows the impact of the long run of Ponniyin Selvan. The historical film is creating history by collecting amazing numbers.
Not only in Tamil Nadu but Overseas also Ponniyin Selvan has performed superbly and become a huge blockbuster. The film’s Overseas gross is now close to 19.7M and it’s expected to touch the 20 million mark in its full run.
If it does so, will become the 5th South Indian film to cross the 20 Million mark overseas. The other four films that have achieved this feat are Baahubali2, RRR, KGF, and 2PointO. The film’s worldwide gross is now close to 470 Crores and is heading toward the 500 Crores mark.
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Ponniyin Selvan is a historical fiction drama based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s popular novel of the same name. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi played lead roles, while Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayaram, Sarathkumar, Parthiban are part of the supporting cast.
Surprisingly the film didn’t do any wonders in the Telugu version and has just done ordinary business. In Hindi too it was not great but had a better run than in the Telugu version nevertheless Ponniyin Selvan-1 is a big success and a very profitable venture for the makers. The second part of the film is expected to be released in next year Summer.
