A bad week for Tollywood

After the dull performance of Sai Dharam Tej’s Republic, Tollywood was hoping for some kind of redemption. This week saw two releases in the form of Konda Polam and Aaradugula Bullet. While one is a content-driven movie, the other is an out-and-out commercial film.

Sadly, both these movies failed to impress the Tollywood audience and opened to below-par reviews. Konda Polam was panned by the critics for being too slow and out of place in major parts. Aaradugula Bullet on the other hand turned out to be an outdated masala flick that had nothing special to take home.

The second consecutive slow week has now put all eyes on Love Story which is doing a decent job.

The Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi starter romantic drama might actually do well this week owing to the festive season and low competition. With no biggies up next, for now, it’s actually a good time for Love Story to extend its winning run

Republic 1st week Box-office Status

Sai Dharam Tej’s Republic opened to mixed reviews and sparse occupancy last week. The political drama directed by Deva Katta impressed in parts but couldn’t live up to the expectations.

The first week’s worldwide share of the film is Rs 6 crores while the film’s theatricals amount to Rs 12 crores. This means the film is headed towards a disaster unless it sees a sharp pick up in occupancy, which doesn’t seem likely now.

Republic is an action-packed commentary on the Indian democratic system and how politicians yield supreme power over the civil servants and courts. Sai Dharam Tej is played IAS officer Abhiram Panja in the film who clashes with Ramya Krishna who is essaying the role of a wily political leader.

Popular news channel calls Vishnu a below-average hero

Manchu Vishnu’s candidature for MAA president has brought him back to the limelight and trolls as well. The actor has been making back-to-back media appearances and slandering his opponent Prakash Raj from all ends.

This hyper-aggressive strategy of Vishnu has invited great criticism. Many are even questioning the need for so much public controversy for MAA elections. Amidst all this talk about the elections, a popular Telugu news channel termed him as a below-average hero, much to the amusement of netizens.

The anchor made the remark speaking to senior actor Murali Mohan, who was also the former president of MAA. ‘Big stars and heroes do not contest for these elections and they are just contempt being a member of the associations. Only below average or average heroes step up for leadership roles like now Vishnu has stepped up.”

Konda Polam review: dull narration of an interesting concept

Konda Polam has created a lot of curiosity right through its initial posters and teasers. Vaishnav Tej has once again reprised the role of village guy and has gone the not-so-routine way once again early in his career. Based on Sannapureddi Venkata Rami Reddy novel of the same name, Konda Polam looks to follow the unchartered path and is not your regular commercial story. What works for it? What doesn’t? Let’s check out

Story: Ravi (Vaishnav) a young village boy has been looking for a job for quite some time and faces continuous rejections due to his communication skills and confidence. An incident takes place at his village that brings about massive change in him and he even appears for UPSC interview for IFS position. What is the incident and how it impacted him and what changes it brought later forces the crux of the story

Performance: Vaishnav Tej has once again gone for a village boy role and gets the ominous task of carrying the film on his shoulders. He has done a decent job for a beginner and will get sharper in expressions with time. Rakul has few scenes of impact but is otherwise wasted as Obulamma. Sai Chand and Kota Srinivasa Rao (cameo) are heads above the rest of the cast and are dependable as ever. Krish has tried to go the other way this time and is not worried about commercial sensibilities. Instead, he has picked a strong subject that occasionally gets dull and flat in narration. MM Keeravani’s music is good and bgm keeps you engaging.

Analysis: Krish has picked up quite an engaging concept for Konda Polam. The cast also looks fresh and so does the setting and the serene forests provide a beautiful platform for a great story to be told. However, all that doesn’t work out due to weak writing and flat narration. The movie could have been more engaging if it focussed more on human conflicts and emotional aspects of it than a love track and CGI fights.

Verdict: While the attempt is truly appreciable the execution of Konda Polam often goes haywire and provides restlessness to the viewers. Often you might end up questioning the necessity of certain subplots in the film and would rather have it stick to the forest and its proceedings. Give it a watch if you are in mood for something slow yet fresh.

Samantha has been using Instagram as a means to vent and her cryptic posts have got the fans and followers wondering what she’s trying to convey each time and whether there’s more than meets our eye.

Prabhas fans have age-old complaints about the production house as it usually doesn’t provide timely updates on films and delays announcements. The same happened in the case of Saaho and is repeating now for Radhe Shyam. For the past couple of days, fans have been trending hilarious trolls on the production house showcasing their complaints.

The production house also has failed to create the kind of solid buzz for Radhe Shyam. A film starring Prabhas definitely deserves better. If we compare this to rest of the production houses, others are always one step ahead and come up with creative teasers, the countdown to updates, and other announcements.

With UV Creations lagging on these matters, fans are on one hand trolling UV but are also praying that situation improves once ‘Spirit’ goes on floors.

Samantha and Jr NTR shoot together

Samantha and Jr NTR are all set to appear together once again. This time the appearance will be on small screen in Evaru Meelo Koteeswarudu celebrity special episode. Jr. NTR had recently shot for a celebrity special episode with Superstar Mahesh Babu recently. The other episodes in this series are with Ram Charan and SS Rajamouli along with Koratal Siva which have already been telecasted.

Samantha and Jr NTR have earlier worked in Brindavanam, Ramayya Vasthavayya, Rabhasa and Janatha Garage. This is the first appearance of the duo together on small screen.

Evaru Meelo Koteeswarudu has been recording good TRPs so far and the episode is surely going to exceed the ratings. The makers will reveal further details on the episode soon.
