Sankranthi Box Office Message: Do What You Do Best

0

Sankranthi 2026 witnessed two major film releases: Prabhas and Maruthi’s The Raja Saab, a horror fantasy comedy, and Chiranjeevi and Anil Ravipudi’s family entertainer Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu. The box office results of these two films have sent a clear message to filmmakers about what it takes to make a successful movie.

This Sankranthi clearly indicates the success formula for the Telugu film industry

These Sankranthi outcomes show that filmmakers should stay true to their strengths and deliver stories with clarity and confidence. Trying to follow trends or getting influenced by other films can often lead to confusion. It is important to avoid experimenting with genres or subjects that one is not fully comfortable with or prepared to handle.

Anil Ravipudi Sticks to His Strengths – Maruthi Tries Too Hard

Anil Ravipudi stuck to what he does best and delivered a clean, family-friendly entertainer with Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, which worked well with audiences. On the other hand, director Maruthi seems to have been influenced by the scale and style of Prabhas’s recent films. The Raja Saab moved away from a simple horror-comedy and turned into a big-budget horror fantasy, which created confusion in the storytelling.

Unlike Mana Shankara Prasad Garu, the constant changes in the script and tone of The Raja Saab have ultimately resulted in the film failing to connect with the audience.

Jana Nayagan Censor Struggles Continue: Verdict Still Awaited

0

Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, was planned as his final film before entering politics, and it still awaits a final verdict about its censor certificate, with its theatrical release remaining uncertain.

Just days before the release date, January 9, 2026, the CBFC sent the film to a revising committee, citing objections over content. This move stalled the release and triggered a long legal battle.

On January 9, Justice PT Asha of the Madras High Court ordered the CBFC to issue a U/A 16+ certificate immediately, giving hope to the makers. But the relief was short-lived. The CBFC appealed, and a division bench suspended the single judge’s ruling, pushing the case further. The producers then approached the Supreme Court, but the petition was declined, with directions for the Madras High Court to resolve the matter by January 20.

Latest Court Verdict on Jana Nayagan’s Censor Process

On January 20, 2026, the case was heard extensively by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan. Both sides presented their arguments in a marathon session lasting several hours. But the bench chose to reserve its orders, meaning no immediate verdict was delivered.

The judges did not specify a date for the final judgment, but it is expected within the next week. This decision prolongs the uncertainty around the film’s release, leaving fans and the makers waiting anxiously for clarity.

The Current Status of Jana Nayagan

As of now, Jana Nayagan’s release remains on hold, as the final verdict from the Madras High Court will decide whether the film can move forward, making this case one of the most closely watched developments in Tamil cinema.

Court Shock to Telugu Producers

0

The Telangana High Court has once again issued important directions regarding the Telugu cinema ticket price hikes. On Tuesday, the court heard a petition challenging the memo issued by the Home Department that allowed an increase in ticket prices for the film “Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu.”

During the hearing, the High Court issued suo motu contempt notices to C.V. Anand, Principal Secretary of the Home Department. The court expressed strong displeasure over the issuance of orders permitting a ticket price hike for the film, stating that it was done in violation of the court’s earlier directions.

Will the Telugu Producers follow the Telangana High Court’s Directions?

Advocate Vijay Gopal argued the case on behalf of the petitioner in WP No. 1518 of 2026. He contended that Home Department officials had deliberately violated previous court orders. The petitioner’s counsel further stated that the authorities failed to inform the court about the increase in ticket prices for Mana Shankaravaraprasad Garu and allegedly suppressed the facts. Based on these arguments, the High Court issued contempt notices to C.V. Anand.

The Telangana High Court gave directions that the decision regarding ticket price hikes must strictly follow the Telangana Cinemas Regulation Act, 1955. It directed that any decision to increase ticket prices for any film must be announced at least 90 days in advance.

The Telangana High Court firmly warned the authorities not to issue similar orders in the future without complying with its earlier directives.

Prabhas and Maruthi’s The Raja Saab was released in theaters, but the film failed to meet the expectations and faced massive losses, especially in North America.

The horror comedy fantasy has almost ended its box office run with losses in all territories. If we calculate the business value, the maximum loss has occurred for The Raja Saab in North America.

The break-even value for the North American market was set at 7.5 million dollars, but the film is closing under 2.5 million dollars. This means the movie has not even collected one third of its break-even value, resulting in huge losses.

Overall, worldwide, the film has collected only half of its business value. The total break-even requirement was 400 crore gross, but the film managed to collect only 200 crore gross. With this, the film has incurred a business loss of around 100 crore.

After a massive festival week with 140 Cr share collections (including GST) and close to 225 Cr gross collections , Mana Shankara Vara Prasad holds good on day 8 overall but has a drop in collections of Nizam.

If we observe the territory wise numbers on its 8th day, Mana Shankara Vara Prasad sees a drop in Nizam but has a fantastic hold in Andhra.

On Day 8, the film has collected around 90 L share on Nizam, which is under 1 Cr, whereas in Andhra Pradesh the film has collected more than 4.5 Cr. The film also surpassed the 100 Cr share mark in Telugu states without adding GST, a milestone that very few films have been able to achieve.

Overall, the film has collected above 235 Cr gross for 8 days, with a share around 146 Cr worldwide.

Prabhas Spirit Film: Hope for Raja Saab Producers

0

People Media Factory bought Prabhas’ Adipurush rights in the Telugu states for a very high price and faced huge losses. Thereafter, the actor did a film with them, The Raja Saab, which was initially planned on a reasonable budget but eventually turned into a massive-budget project.

Unfortunately, the film failed to impress audiences and resulted in heavy losses for the makers. Since the movie was self-released by the producers, the burden became even bigger.

The Raja Saab Producers put hopes on Spirit

Now, all hopes of People Media Factory are on Prabhas’ next film, Spirit, with Sandeep Vanga, which is announced for a March 2027 release. As it is a crazy project and the rights are with them, the production house expects the film to compensate at least some percentage of the losses.

However, to fully recover all the losses, they will definitely need another successful film with Prabhas. It remains to be seen how the actor will accommodate dates for the production house, as he already has multiple commitments in hand.
